KAI Operates 39 Stainless Steel New Generation Trainsets Across Various Train Services
The transformation of railway services continues as public demand grows for transportation that is comfortable, safe, and modern. One of the changes that customers are increasingly experiencing is the introduction of Stainless Steel New Generation trainsets, which are gradually modernizing long-distance train services across various routes.
Since 2023, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has been implementing the procurement program for 612 Stainless Steel New Generation railcars manufactured by PT INKA (Persero). The program is part of KAI's passenger rolling stock modernization plan, which is scheduled to continue through 2027 with a contract value of Rp5.505 trillion.
To date, a total of 39 trainsets, or 391 Stainless Steel New Generation railcars, have been delivered and are now in operation serving customers. This represents part of the ongoing procurement program, which will continue in stages until its completion in 2027.
Vice President of Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba said that the New Generation procurement program is one of the company's strategic initiatives to improve service quality and enhance the customer travel experience.
"The procurement of 612 New Generation railcars is KAI's long-term investment to gradually modernize its passenger rolling stock. Every trainset that enters service delivers a higher standard of comfort and forms part of our continuous service improvement efforts," said Anne.
The Stainless Steel New Generation trainsets are equipped with various features designed to enhance customer comfort, including ergonomic seats, reclining seats with up to a 135-degree angle, revolving seats that can be adjusted according to the direction of travel, wider legroom, footrests, folding tables, USB ports and power outlets at every seat, as well as automatic sliding doors.
On selected services, customers can also enjoy additional facilities such as the Passenger Information Display System (PIDS), quieter cabins, toilets equipped with foot washers, prayer rooms, baby care desks, and blankets for selected overnight journeys with longer travel times.
Anne explained that the procurement and operation of the New Generation trainsets have also generated valuable feedback that serves as evaluation material for further improvements.
"Throughout the delivery and operation of the New Generation trainsets, we have received extensive feedback from both customers and operational personnel. This feedback has become an important part of our joint evaluation process, enabling continuous improvements in subsequent trainsets," she said.
According to Anne, these improvements are being implemented gradually across various aspects related to customer comfort, including interior details, passenger space configuration, onboard facilities, and other rolling stock components that influence the overall travel experience.
The procurement program for 612 railcars consists of 297 executive-class coaches, 199 economy-class coaches, 57 dining cars, 57 power generator cars, and 2 baggage cars.
