Purwojaya Train Gains Popularity as the Jakarta–Cilacap Southern Route Becomes a Favorite for Weekend Travel
Travel along Java's southern railway corridor has become increasingly vibrant throughout the early months of 2026. One of the most notable developments is the strong growth in ridership on the Purwojaya Train, which operates on the Gambir–Kroya–Cilacap route, recording a significant increase in passengers during the first four months of the year.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that during January–April 2026, the Purwojaya Train served 149,400 passengers, an increase of 70.49% compared with 87,631 passengers during the same period in 2025.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba stated that the trend reflects growing public interest in comfortable and convenient long-distance rail travel, particularly on the Jakarta–southern Java corridor.
“The Purwojaya Train offers a distinctive travel experience. It provides a direct connection from Gambir to Cilacap via Java's southern railway line, passing through a wide variety of scenic landscapes. Many passengers choose this service for short holidays, hometown visits, and family trips.”
The Purwojaya Train is the only executive-class train providing direct service between Cilacap and Gambir Station. For residents of Cilacap, Banyumas, and Kroya, the train has long been the preferred choice for traveling to Jakarta because it offers a direct journey without requiring passengers to transfer to another train.
The increase in ridership has also coincided with growing economic and community activities across the Banyumas and Cilacap regions. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), Central Java's transportation and warehousing sector grew by 9.24% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026, making it one of the province's fastest-growing sectors. This growth has been driven by increasing interregional mobility, expanding economic activity, and rising tourism travel across cities along Java's southern corridor.
In addition to serving public mobility, the Purwojaya Train route also provides access to numerous tourist destinations in southern Central Java. From Purwokerto, passengers can continue their journey to the Baturraden tourism area on the slopes of Mount Slamet. From Cilacap, visitors can explore Teluk Penyu Beach, Pendem Fortress, Segara Anakan Lagoon, and the coastal city's distinctive seafood culinary attractions and southern seaside atmosphere.
The Purwojaya Train is also well known for offering a more relaxing travel experience as it passes through rice fields, rolling hills, and the mountainous scenery characteristic of Java's southern railway route. Many passengers take advantage of the overnight journey to rest before arriving at their destination the following morning.
“Rail travel has become part of the holiday experience itself. Many passengers enjoy the journey by taking in the scenery along the southern corridor while spending quality time with family and friends during the trip.”
The Purwojaya Train began operations on 13 March 1995 and has since become the flagship train service of KAI Operational Area 5 Purwokerto. The name Purwojaya is derived from the combination of Purwokerto and Jayakarta, symbolizing the strong connectivity between southern Java and Jakarta.
With passenger numbers continuing to grow, the Purwojaya Train demonstrates that Java's southern railway corridor remains one of the public's favorite travel routes for enjoying weekend trips with a more comfortable and memorable journey.
