KAI Successfully Serves 369,457 Customers During the Long Weekend Departure Period
The extended holiday period of Eid al-Adha 1447 Hijri, which coincides closely with Pancasila Day, has encouraged increased public mobility across various regions. Trains have once again become a preferred travel option for people who want to enjoy their holidays with more predictable travel times, comfortable journeys, and convenient access to city centers and tourist destinations.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that as of Thursday, 28 May 2026 at 10:00 WIB, ticket sales for the departure period of 26 May to 1 June 2026 had reached 1,008,122 tickets. This figure still has the potential to increase as ticket sales continue. Meanwhile, during the first two days of the departure period on 26–27 May 2026, KAI served a total of 369,457 customers.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that high public enthusiasm has been evident since the first day of the long weekend period.
"This long weekend shows that trains are increasingly becoming the main choice for people traveling between cities. Besides being more practical and comfortable, train travel also provides a more relaxed travel experience, allowing customers to enjoy their holiday moments more pleasantly," she said.
KAI observed that customer travel patterns during this period were fairly evenly distributed across various favorite destinations in Java and Sumatra. Yogyakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Solo, and Surabaya remained the main destinations for customers due to their tourism, culinary, cultural attractions, and increasingly accessible intermodal connectivity from railway stations. Amid high road traffic during the long holiday period, people are increasingly considering travel comfort, punctuality, and the experience of enjoying scenery from the train window as part of the holiday experience itself.
Daily train customer occupancy during the long weekend period:
- 26 May 2026: 214,349 customers
- 27 May 2026: 155,108 customers
- 28 May 2026: 141,610 customers
- 29 May 2026: 119,922 customers
- 30 May 2026: 128,931 customers
- 31 May 2026: 121,581 customers
- 1 June 2026: 126,621 customers
The occupancy data shows a relatively long and stable customer movement pattern throughout the holiday period. The departure peak occurred on 26 May 2026 with more than 214 thousand customers, then remained above 100 thousand customers per day until early June. This condition indicates that people are increasingly using long weekends for more flexible travel, whether for returning home, tourism, or short escapes to various destinations.
Meanwhile, based on temporary cumulative sales data for the period of 26 May–1 June 2026, the following are the Top 10 Favorite Departure Stations during the long weekend:
1. Pasarsenen Station: 76,356 customers
2. Gambir Station: 63,757 customers
3. Yogyakarta Station: 57,603 customers
4. Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng Station: 40,289 customers
5. Bandung Station: 33,456 customers
6. Surabaya Gubeng Station: 32,835 customers
7. Surabaya Pasarturi Station: 32,537 customers
8. Lempuyangan Station: 29,801 customers
9. Purwokerto Station: 29,136 customers
10. Semarang Poncol Station: 28,231 customers
The dominance of Pasarsenen and Gambir Stations shows that the Jakarta area remains the largest mobility hub for the public during the long weekend. Meanwhile, the high departure volumes from Yogyakarta, Semarang, Purwokerto, and Surabaya demonstrate strong intercity connectivity through railway services across Java Island. The list also reflects changes in public travel preferences, with people increasingly choosing cities offering cultural tourism, culinary experiences, heritage attractions, and urban areas that can be directly accessed from city centers through train services.
To support smooth customer departures during this busy period, KAI continues to strengthen digital service transformation by listening to customer needs and feedback for a more practical, faster, and more convenient boarding process. One of the developments being continuously optimized is the Face Recognition feature at station boarding gates. From January to April 2026, a total of 3,129,387 customers have utilized this service to accelerate the boarding process and help reduce queues at departure stations.
"Digital transformation will continue to be developed to provide journeys that are safer, more comfortable, more efficient, and more relevant to current public mobility needs," she said.
