Sangkuriang Train Serves 40,982 Customers, Covering 1,002 Kilometers Along Southern Java Route
Long-distance train travel is becoming increasingly popular among the public, especially ahead of long weekends, which are often associated with increased tourism activities and family trips. Since beginning operations in early May 2026 until 24 May 2026, the Sangkuriang Train on the Bandung–Ketapang round-trip route has served a total of 40,982 customers.
The Sangkuriang Train is the second-longest intercity railway service in Indonesia after the Blambangan Ekspres Train. The train travels approximately 1,002 kilometers, connecting Bandung City to Ketapang, Banyuwangi.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the Sangkuriang Train provides a more comfortable long-distance travel experience with various service class options and the distinctive scenery of Java Island’s southern railway route.
"Traveling by train offers a different atmosphere. Customers can enjoy changing landscapes, from mountain areas and rice fields to the eastern coastal regions of Java, in a more relaxed way from the train window," she said.
The Sangkuriang Train began serving the Bandung–Ketapang route on 1 May 2026 and the Ketapang–Bandung route on 2 May 2026. During one journey, the train passes through various major cities such as Yogyakarta, Solo, Madiun, Surabaya, Probolinggo, Jember, and Banyuwangi.
This long journey provides a unique experience for customers because the southern route is known for its diverse natural scenery, ranging from the mountainous areas of Priangan, the vast rice fields of Central Java, to the eastern Java region known for plantations and coastal landscapes.
