PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is strengthening passenger service capacity in the Lampung and South Sumatra regions through the delivery of 25 train units from Daop 1 Jakarta to Divre IV Tanjungkarang and the Southern Sumatra region (Sumbagsel). This step is being taken in line with increasing public mobility for railway services in the region.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that the strengthening of rolling stock capacity is being carried out to maintain passenger services in Sumatra, particularly on routes experiencing customer growth throughout 2026.

"Public mobility in the Lampung and South Sumatra regions continues to increase. Therefore, rolling stock readiness needs to be prepared gradually so that service capacity and operational reliability remain maintained," she said.

Based on the progress of rolling stock delivery, KAI carried out the shipment gradually from May to June 2026. The process began with loading the rolling stock at Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT), followed by transportation to the sea crossing and onward delivery to the Rajabasa area.

The 25 train units delivered consist of economy class coaches (K3), dining cars (M1), and power cars (P), which are prepared to support passenger service operations in the Sumbagsel region.

The strengthening of rolling stock capacity is in line with customer growth on railway services in Divre III Palembang and Divre IV Tanjungkarang. From January to April 2026, customer volume on railway services in the region continued to show an increase.

One example can be seen in the Rajabasa Train service, which served 301,658 customers, an increase of 32.92 percent compared with the same period in 2025, when it served 226,946 customers.

Meanwhile, the Kuala Stabas Train service served 246,555 customers from January to April 2026, increasing compared with the same period last year, which recorded 237,761 customers.

According to Anne, this trend shows that intercity mobility needs in Sumatra continue to develop, especially for public transportation services with large passenger capacity and more predictable travel times.

KAI also continues to synchronize rolling stock deliveries, prepare distribution routes, and coordinate technical transportation arrangements to ensure that all stages proceed according to the operational plan.

"This strengthening of rolling stock capacity is prepared so that service capacity in Sumatra can keep pace with customer growth, which continues to move positively. KAI continues to monitor operational needs in each region so that services for the public can continue to run optimally," she said.
