While Everyone Sleeps, Railway Operations Keep Moving

While most people are resting at night, railway operations continue uninterrupted. Behind the first train departures every morning across cities on Java Island are thousands of personnel working to ensure rolling stock readiness, inspect railway tracks, manage train movements, and make sure every trainset is ready to depart on schedule.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that in 2026, it manages 2,062 railway coaches for operations across Java Island, covering various types and classes. Of these, 1,789 units are in operationally ready condition to serve customers on various routes.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that rolling stock readiness is maintained through operational processes that run continuously 24 hours a day, including during the night and early morning hours when public activity has diminished.

"Many important tasks are carried out at night to ensure that the first train services every morning operate safely and according to schedule. There are personnel inspecting track conditions, cleaning train coaches, conducting technical inspections of rolling stock, and preparing trainsets for early morning departures," she said.

At depots and departure stations, nighttime operations are one of the most critical phases of railway operations. Trainsets that have completed their service immediately undergo technical inspections, exterior washing, checks of braking systems, air conditioning, electrical systems, and interior cleanliness before being returned to service for their next journey.

At the same time, infrastructure personnel inspect railway tracks, switches, signaling systems, and operational networks across various routes on Java Island to ensure safe operations ahead of the morning peak hours.

KAI also maintains reserve rolling stock to ensure operational flexibility. Of the total available fleet, 258 coaches are designated as reserve units to accommodate additional service requirements and anticipate operational disruptions.

Meanwhile, another 273 coaches are undergoing scheduled maintenance as part of ongoing efforts to maintain the reliability of the rolling stock.

Among the coach types with the highest number of operationally ready units are the Stainless Steel New Generation Economy coaches, Premium Economy coaches, and Regular Economy coaches.

The data indicate that the majority of the rolling stock remains operational despite undergoing routine maintenance rotation. For example, of the 209 Stainless Steel New Generation Economy coaches owned by KAI on Java Island, 181 units are currently operationally ready. Meanwhile, for Premium Economy coaches, 171 of the total 197 units are ready to serve customer journeys.

According to Anne, the operational rhythm of railway services differs from that of many other transportation sectors because most preparation activities take place during the night and early morning hours.

"When customers board a train in the morning, a long series of preparations has actually been underway since the previous night. Many personnel work behind the scenes to ensure every journey remains safe, comfortable, and on time," she said.
