Weekend Trip to Yogyakarta on the Bogowonto Train? More Than 91,000 Passengers Chose This Southern Route in Early 2026
Weekend trips to Yogyakarta remained a popular choice for many travelers throughout the early months of 2026. One of the services that continued to record passenger growth was the Bogowonto Train, operating on the Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen round-trip route, which served 91,892 passengers during January–April 2026, up from 89,236 passengers during the same period in 2025.
The Bogowonto Train is one of KAI's favorite services connecting Jakarta and Yogyakarta via Java's southern railway corridor. The journey passes through a variety of regions, from the coastal area of Cirebon and the agricultural landscapes of Banyumas to the mountainous scenery and rice fields of western Yogyakarta.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba stated that the growth in Bogowonto Train passengers reflects the strong demand for travel along the Jakarta–Yogyakarta corridor, which has long been one of the busiest railway routes on Java.
“The Bogowonto Train serves a wide range of travel purposes, including tourism, education, family visits, and business trips. The increase in passenger numbers during the early months of 2026 demonstrates the public's growing interest in comfortable rail travel with direct connections to major urban activity centers.”
The Bogowonto Train currently offers Executive Class and New Generation Economy Class services, operating between Pasarsenen Station in Jakarta and Lempuyangan Station in Yogyakarta. Morning departures from Yogyakarta and evening departures from Jakarta make the train especially attractive to passengers seeking to maximize their weekend in either city.
Throughout the journey, passengers can enjoy the distinctive scenery of Java's southern railway corridor, which offers a different travel experience from the northern route. As the train passes through Kutoarjo, Kebumen, and Purwokerto, expansive rice fields, rivers, and rolling hills become part of the scenic experience that many long-distance rail travelers appreciate.
The regions served by the Bogowonto Train also feature growing tourism potential. Yogyakarta remains one of Indonesia's leading tourist destinations, renowned for its cultural attractions, culinary experiences, and heritage sites. Meanwhile, Purwokerto and the Banyumas region continue to develop as tourism destinations through attractions such as Baturraden and their vibrant traditional culinary centers, which attract large numbers of visitors during weekends.
The Bogowonto Train has long held a special place among travelers as one of the flagship economy-class services connecting Yogyakarta and Jakarta. With the introduction of New Generation rolling stock, passengers now enjoy a more comfortable travel experience, including air-conditioned coaches, power outlets, and onboard meal services.
“Train travel offers a different rhythm of journey. Many passengers spend their weekends enjoying a more relaxing trip while watching the changing landscapes from one city to another through the train window. The Bogowonto Train continues to be a preferred choice for experiencing a safe, comfortable, and memorable journey along Java's southern corridor.”
