Along the Banks of the Serayu River: Serayu Train Remains a Favorite for Mobility and Tourism on Java’s Southern Route
Amid the high level of public mobility along Java's southern railway corridor, the Serayu Train continues to maintain its position as one of Indonesia's most popular economy-class train services. Operating on the Purwokerto–Pasarsenen route via Bandung, the train remains a preferred choice for passengers by connecting residential areas, educational centers, tourist destinations, and community economic hubs along one extensive and well-connected railway corridor.
According to KAI data, the Serayu Train served 446,704 passengers during January–April 2026, an increase compared with 434,678 passengers during the same period in 2025. This growth was driven by strong passenger mobility along the Jakarta, Bandung, Tasikmalaya, Kroya, and Purwokerto corridor, which has long been one of the busiest travel routes on Java's southern line.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba stated that the Serayu Train has maintained a loyal and consistent passenger base because it serves a wide variety of travel needs.
“The Serayu Train serves a corridor with vibrant mobility throughout the year. Passengers travel for work, education, business activities, family visits, and tourism. This route also connects cities experiencing continuous regional economic and social growth.”
On a monthly basis, Serayu Train ridership remained stable. In January 2026, the train served 115,585 passengers, followed by 99,291 in February, increasing to 118,386 in March, and reaching 113,442 in April. These figures generally exceeded those recorded during the same period in the previous year: 110,995 passengers in January 2025, 103,696 in February, 100,530 in March, and 119,457 in April.
This consistency demonstrates that the Serayu Train remains a preferred option for medium- and long-distance travel thanks to its affordable fares. In addition to connecting Jakarta with the Greater Banyumas region, the Serayu Train also strengthens intercity connectivity across East Priangan and southern Central Java, where education, commerce, and tourism activities continue to expand.
From a travel experience perspective, the Serayu Train offers a distinctive journey unlike other rail services on Java. The train passes through the industrial areas of Greater Jakarta, the mountainous landscapes of East Priangan, and the scenic Serayu River valley, which is closely associated with Purwokerto and its surrounding region. These landscapes provide passengers with continuously changing panoramic views throughout the journey.
As the train travels through Nagreg, Cicalengka, and Cibatu, passengers can enjoy views of lush green hills, valleys, and the winding railway tracks that characterize Java's southern corridor. Upon reaching Kroya and Purwokerto, the scenery transforms into expansive rice fields and the Serayu River, one of the iconic geographical features of the Banyumas region.
The Serayu Train also provides convenient access to numerous leading tourist destinations along its route. From Purwokerto, passengers can continue their journey to Baturraden on the slopes of Mount Slamet, Curug Cipendok Waterfall, and the culinary destinations of Banyumas and Sokaraja. Meanwhile, in the East Priangan region, travelers can visit Mount Galunggung, explore the city of Tasikmalaya, and discover the area's renowned embroidery and traditional decorative umbrella (payung geulis) handicraft centers, which form an important part of the region's cultural heritage.
“The Serayu Train has developed a strong emotional connection with the community. Many passengers have made this service part of their travel routine for many years. KAI remains committed to ensuring that the service continues to be safe, comfortable, and responsive to the mobility needs of communities along Java's southern corridor.”
