KAI's Rolling Stock Investment Strengthens Logistics Capacity and Passenger Services
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) continues to invest in railway rolling stock to strengthen freight capacity and passenger services. The procurement is being carried out in phases through the addition of passenger coaches, freight wagons, locomotives, and Commuter Line trainsets to maintain operational reliability amid growing public mobility and national logistics distribution.
Vice President Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba stated that strengthening rolling stock is a strategic necessity because railway services play an important role in connecting communities, industrial estates, logistics centers, ports, and various national economic hubs.
“This rolling stock investment is intended to strengthen service capacity, maintain operational reliability, and support the efficiency of both freight and passenger transportation. KAI aims to ensure that the growth of national mobility and logistics is supported by rolling stock that is increasingly reliable, modern, and capable of meeting growing demand,” said Anne.
To date, KAI's rolling stock procurement program includes 436 New Generation passenger coaches, 902 freight wagons, and 52 locomotives. This procurement forms part of KAI's long-term strategy to strengthen rolling stock readiness in anticipation of increasing service demand across its operational regions.
For new procurement, KAI is also preparing 612 passenger coaches manufactured by PT INKA (Persero), 1,125 freight wagons produced by PT INKA (Persero), and 54 CC205 locomotives manufactured by Progress Rail. For the procurement of flat wagons, some units have already arrived in Simpang, South Sumatra, while the remainder are still undergoing shipment, testing, and production, with phased completion targeted by the end of 2026.
The freight wagon procurement is intended to strengthen rail-based logistics services, particularly for container transportation and other strategic commodities. With greater carrying capacity, railways can become a more efficient and predictable distribution option for the industrial sector.
In the traction sector, KAI is also strengthening locomotive readiness to support freight operations. Following the earlier procurement of CC205 locomotives, KAI has continued with the acquisition of an additional 54 CC205 locomotives with an investment value of USD222.5 million, or approximately Rp3.56 trillion. Some of these locomotives have already arrived and are being prepared in stages to strengthen national freight operations.
Anne explained that rolling stock improvements are also being made for passenger services through the procurement of New Generation passenger coaches. These coaches are designed to enhance travel comfort, strengthen intercity service capacity, and meet customers' expectations for increasingly modern public transportation services.
“KAI continues to improve the quality of passenger services through rolling stock that is more comfortable, safer, and better suited to customer needs. The procurement of New Generation passenger coaches is part of the service transformation that we continue to implement.”
For Commuter Line services, rolling stock procurement is also progressing. The procurement of Commuter Line trainsets manufactured by INKA includes 16 trainsets, of which seven are already in operation serving passengers in urban areas.
KAI considers rolling stock investment to be strategically important because it directly impacts service capacity, operational punctuality, distribution efficiency, and the strengthening of domestic industry. The involvement of PT INKA in the procurement of passenger coaches and freight wagons also supports the expansion of Indonesia's railway manufacturing capacity.
“The majority of KAI's rolling stock procurement involves domestic industries. This is important for strengthening the national railway ecosystem, creating opportunities to enhance manufacturing capabilities, and ensuring that rolling stock requirements can be met sustainably.”
Anne added that rolling stock investment will continue to support stronger national connectivity, increase rail-based logistics capacity, and maintain the quality of public transportation services. Through these initiatives, KAI remains committed to delivering railway services that are increasingly reliable, productive, and responsive to the needs of the national economy.
