
KAI Prioritizes Victim Care and Family Support Amidst Tragedy: 2-Week Information Posts Set Up at Bekasi Timur and Gambir Stations, Several Train Journeys Cancelled
The incident in the East Bekasi Station area still leaves deep sorrow for many parties. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) once again expresses its condolences to the deceased victims and their grieving families, as well as to all injured victims currently undergoing medical treatment.
Along with the ongoing handling process, KAI understands that families and the public are still awaiting developments in information. Therefore, every update is delivered carefully, while maintaining respect for the victims and their families.
Since the beginning of the incident, all efforts have been focused on handling the victims by prioritizing the safety and condition of every passenger. The evacuation process was carried out carefully because there were victims requiring special handling, with medical and safety considerations so that every step could run optimally. Medical teams, Basarnas, KAI, and all related parties worked in a coordinated manner in the field.
President Prabowo Subianto directly inspected the condition of the train accident victims at Dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Regional General Hospital in Bekasi on Tuesday morning, April 28. During the visit, the President ensured that victim handling runs optimally and emphasized that the government will conduct a thorough evaluation of the railway safety system so that similar incidents do not recur.
"I came to ensure the victims get the best care. We are all certainly concerned about this incident. The government will immediately conduct an investigation and take corrective steps so that railway safety is better maintained," he said.
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi stated that the government will conduct a thorough evaluation of this incident as part of efforts to improve railway safety.
"Every incident will be material for evaluation for us. The government will ensure corrective steps are taken so that train travel safety is better maintained," he said.
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin stated that based on the latest data as of 08.45 Western Indonesia Time, 14 people were recorded dead and 84 injured victims. The deceased victims have been taken to the Kramat Jati Police Hospital for further identification processes, while injured victims receive treatment at various health facilities.
"As many as 84 injured victims have received medical treatment in a number of hospitals. We have carried out the evacuation together with the joint team, and currently we ensure all victims get the best care," Bobby said.
Bobby added that KAI has set up an emergency response post to accompany the victims' families.
"We have set up emergency response posts at East Bekasi Station and Gambir Station, as well as the Contact Center 121 service. We will keep these posts on standby for the next two weeks to help with information needs for families," he explained.
National Transportation Safety Committee Chairman Soerjanto Tjahjono stated that the investigation process will be carried out thoroughly and independently.
"We will examine all aspects in the investigation process to ensure the cause of the incident can be identified objectively," he said.
Victim handling is carried out at several health facilities, including Bekasi Regional General Hospital, Bella Bekasi Hospital, Primaya Hospital, Mitra Plumbon Cibitung Hospital, Bakti Kartini Hospital, Siloam Hospital East Bekasi, Hermina Hospital, as well as Mitra Keluarga Hospital East and West Bekasi.
KAI ensures all victims receive maximum care. All medical expenses for injured victims and funeral costs for deceased victims are covered by insurance together with KAI.
As a form of assistance to families, KAI has prepared an Emergency Response Post and Information Post at East Bekasi Station and Gambir Station which will be on standby for the next two weeks. Families can obtain information through the KAI Contact Center 121.
For the time being, East Bekasi Station is not yet serving passenger boarding and alighting. Commuter Line travel is served up to Bekasi Station, while the downstream track has been opened for operations with limited arrangements and the upstream track is still undergoing handling processes.
