Ensuring Supply Chain Stability with High Capacity, KAI Transports 1,950 Tons of Fertilizer in Q1 2026
Rail-based logistics performance continues to show its role in maintaining the distribution of strategic commodities with measurable operating patterns. One such movement is reflected in fertilizer freight served by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) as part of the national distribution system.
Throughout January to March 2026, KAI served 1,950 tons of fertilizer freight. In 2025, total fertilizer freight reached 21,060 tons. Overall, KAI's total freight transport in the first quarter of 2026 reached 14,948,442 tons, showing a continuously moving distribution scale.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that fertilizer transportation illustrates how the railway logistics system operates on a large scale.
"Our focus is to keep distribution running on schedule with adequate capacity. Fertilizer is one example of how trains manage large-scale shipments regularly," Anne said.
Trains offer advantages in hauling capacity and travel consistency. In a single train set, capacity can reach up to 4,200 tons, supported by a maximum of 60 cars. The capacity per car currently averages 50 tons and continues to be upgraded up to 70 tons.
This performance is supported by operational punctuality. In the first quarter of 2026, freight departure punctuality was recorded at 95.97% and arrival at 91.77%. This figure provides certainty for business actors in planning distribution.
"Trains keep the distribution rhythm stable. When schedules are maintained, the shipping process can be planned with greater certainty," Anne continued.
The strengthening of rail-based logistics also contributes to national efficiency. Currently, Indonesia's logistics costs remain in the range of 15% to over 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while global standards are around 7 to 8%.
About 60% of national logistics activities are located on Java Island with a value reaching IDR 2,400 to 2,500 trillion per year. Distribution improvements in this region provide a broad impact on economic movement.
In the context of its utilization, fertilizer is one of the commodities that has a direct impact on the agricultural and food sectors. When distribution runs on schedule, the planting process can take place on time, crop yields are better preserved, and food supplies in the community remain stable.
"Distribution running on schedule provides certainty for many sectors, including agriculture as one example. This is what we continue to maintain through the improvement of operational quality," Anne concluded.
