500 Million Journeys and the Responsibility to Safeguard Public Trust

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is strengthening its operational and safety systems through a comprehensive technical assessment conducted with TÜV Rheinland, a global independent institution in Testing, Inspection, and Certification (TIC). This step comes as public mobility continues to rise and the railway network expands across various regions.

The activity was carried out in the Executive Session Workshop: Technical Audit & Comprehensive RAMS Assessment Project for Rolling Stock, Infrastructure, Operations and Safety – RAMS Knowledge Sharing KAI, held at the Jakarta Railway Center Ballroom on Thursday (4/23).

KAI Director of Management Portfolio and Information Technology I Gede Darmayusa stated that KAI is currently in a growth phase with an increasingly broad and complex operational scale.

"When more than 500 million trips occur in a single year, the system must operate with precision. Every process needs to be measurable, integrated, and capable of responding to risks quickly," said I Gede Darmayusa.

In the first quarter of 2026, KAI Group served 128,055,072 customers. On an annual basis, passenger volume increased from 154.5 million in 2021 to 503.6 million by the end of 2025. This figure demonstrates the continuously rising operational intensity across the entire network.

I Gede emphasized that public trust rests on the consistency of the system working behind every journey.

"Public trust stems from a system that runs disciplined and allows its performance to be monitored. Therefore, reinforcement is carried out across rolling stock maintenance, infrastructure, and data-based operations management," he asserted.

Currently, KAI manages nearly 11,000 units of rolling stock, with approximately 35% scheduled to enter a renewal phase in the coming years, along with an 8,178-kilometer rail network. This scale requires a thorough evaluation to ensure all processes remain under clear control.

In this assessment, TÜV Rheinland uses the RAMS (Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, Safety) approach, combining historical data analysis with physical inspections of field assets, ranging from railway lines to bridges.

Project Manager of TÜV Rheinland, Brian Wong, explained that this approach provides a comprehensive overview of system performance.

"The RAMS approach helps identify potential risks early and provides data-driven recommendations that can be implemented immediately to maintain system reliability," explained Brian.

As a global company established in 1872 and headquartered in Cologne, Germany, TÜV Rheinland operates in more than 50 countries with tens of thousands of experts. Its cross-sector experience—spanning energy, manufacturing, transportation, and technology—enriches the perspective of the assessment process.

KAI also places safety aspects, including at level crossings, as a key focus in this evaluation. These efforts are aimed at maintaining the downward trend in operational disruptions and ensuring every journey takes place with well-maintained safety levels.

"Mobility growth must be accompanied by an increasingly strong system. KAI ensures that every journey proceeds under measurable and accountable control," I Gede Darmayusa concluded.
