KA Brumbung Cargo Launches as a More Efficient National Logistics Alternative
Logistics movement continues to be an essential part of keeping economic activity running smoothly. Throughout the first quarter of 2026, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded container freight transport reaching 1,371,036 tons, an increase compared to 1,196,600 tons in the same period of 2025. This rise indicates a shift in goods distribution, which is increasingly relying on rail-based transportation.
This growth goes hand in hand with KAI's efforts to expand its logistics services. One of the steps taken is launching the KA Brumbung Cargo, serving freight transport from Brumbung Station in Demak Regency to Pasoso Station in Jakarta. This service is designed to provide a more efficient and scheduled distribution option for business operators.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the increase in container transport volume is a positive signal of customer confidence in rail-based logistics services.
"This growth shows that railways are increasingly chosen as part of the distribution chain. Goods travel can be planned with greater certainty, maintaining reliable transit times," said Anne.
In line with this, the arrival of KA Brumbung Cargo forms part of strengthening the logistics network across Java Island. Operating with 20 flatcars—equivalent to 40 TEUs—the train has a carrying capacity of up to approximately 800 tons in a single trip and serves multi-commodity shipping at a frequency of once every two days. This operational scheme gives business operators room to adjust their distribution needs more systematically.
The selection of Brumbung Station as the departure point was made through a study considering its strategic position and potential demand in Central Java. This line also connects production regions with distribution centers in Jakarta, thereby strengthening interregional logistics connectivity.
The role of operational regions is also evident in the freight transport performance within Daop 4 Semarang. During the first quarter of 2026, container freight was recorded at 58,770 tons, a 16% increase compared to 50,459 tons in 2025. Commodities such as BHP reached 693 tons (a 31% increase), while other goods reached 11,020 tons (a 122% growth). Meanwhile, parcel transport was recorded at 1,137 tons, adjusting to dynamic distribution demands.
Operational performance in this region also remained well-maintained. Departure punctuality for freight transport in Daop 4 Semarang reached 99.26%, while arrival punctuality reached 97.85%, supporting distributions that run according to plan.
Nationally, KAI's operational performance in freight transport continues to demonstrate improvement. In the first quarter of 2026, departure punctuality was recorded at 95.97% and arrival punctuality at 91.77%, an improvement compared to the same period of the previous year, which recorded departure punctuality at 95.89% and arrival punctuality at 87.04%. This achievement keeps goods distribution running consistently.
Anne added that developing rail-based freight transport also impacts overall transport system efficiency. Shifting distribution to railways helps reduce road congestion while keeping infrastructure conditions optimal.
"Logistics travel that shifts to railways provides broader benefits, ranging from cost efficiency to smooth distribution across various regions," she continued.
By strengthening services like KA Brumbung Cargo and improving operational performance across regions, KAI continues to adapt its services to current distribution needs.
"We continue to conduct evaluations by listening to customer needs and following logistics distribution trends. The hope is that railways will become an increasingly relevant choice in supporting the movement of goods in Indonesia," Anne concluded.
