Train travel has now become part of how we enjoy our time, especially during weekends. One journey that offers this exact experience is the Malabar Train, connecting Bandung and Malang across the southern route of Java Island with ever-changing scenery throughout the trip.

During the first quarter of 2026, the Malabar Train served 232,422 passengers, marking a 39.9% increase compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 166,125 passengers. This growth highlights growing public interest in intercity travel that delivers both comfort and an immersive travel experience.

Traversing the southern route of Java, the Malabar Train presents a distinctive landscape character. The journey passes through sprawling rice fields in East Priangan, lush green hills in southern West Java, long bridges spanning deep valleys, and tunnels that form part of the historical infrastructure along this corridor. This landscape continuously transforms as the train passes through Tasikmalaya and Banjar before heading toward Yogyakarta and Madiun.

Spanning a distance of approximately 779 kilometers, this route connects various cities with distinct characteristics. Bandung is renowned for its cool mountain air and creative atmosphere, while Malang offers alpine coolness and access to various natural tourism destinations such as the Batu region and its surroundings. Both cities serve as favored destinations for relaxation or spending quality time with family.

The Malabar Train operates as a passenger train service serving the Bandung–Malang round-trip route and stands as the sole direct rail connection between the two cities. Daily operations feature two departures for passengers to choose from: the Morning Malabar Train and the Afternoon Malabar Train.

This service utilizes stainless steel executive and premium economy trainsets designed to provide comfort for long-distance travel. Since its launch on April 30, 2010, the Malabar Train has continuously adapted its services to align with evolving customer needs, including upgrades to the rolling stock currently in use.

The Malabar Train's route encompasses numerous stations along the southern line, starting from Bandung, Kiaracondong, Tasikmalaya, Banjar, Kroya, Yogyakarta, Solo Balapan, Madiun, Kediri, Blitar, to Malang. This connectivity allows passengers to easily reach various cities within a single planned journey.

Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that this surge in passenger volume reflects a shift in how the public approaches travel planning.

"Train travel today offers a unique experience, as passengers can enjoy the ever-changing scenery along the southern route. We continue to adapt our services to meet customer needs, ensuring that intercity travel becomes increasingly easy to plan and remains comfortable for various activities," Anne concluded.

With tracks stretching across the southern side of Java Island, the Malabar Train delivers a journey that brings together diverse landscapes in a single smooth ride. This trip forms an integral part of the experience passengers enjoy, from one city to the next.
