4.65 Million KAI Customers Used PSO Services in the First Quarter of 2026, Expanding Access to Affordable Transportation
Mornings at many stations always begin with a similar story. There are those who set off to work to support their families, students traveling to school, and healthcare workers who must be present for 24-hour services. Amid this rhythm, the railway serves as a vital component keeping everything in motion.
During the first quarter of Q1 2026, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) served 4,659,678 passengers through train services operating under the Public Service Obligation (PSO) scheme. This figure represents a 13.91% increase compared to 4,090,500 passengers in the same period last year. Behind these numbers, public journeys continue to flow, connecting homes with workplaces, university campuses, and public service facilities.
Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that this service provides the public with room to carry out daily activities at affordable rates.
"Behind these figures are parents leaving early in the morning, university students pursuing their ambitions, and healthcare workers traveling during night shifts. Trains remain an integral part of their journey," said Anne.
The PSO services managed directly by KAI encompass both long-distance and local trips, recording 2,956,097 passengers on Long-Distance PSO trains and 1,703,581 passengers on Local PSO trains throughout Q1 2026. This connectivity opens inter-regional access at affordable costs, enabling more people to reach diverse activity centers.
This movement is even more pronounced across urban areas. KAI Commuter recorded 101,382,889 passengers, an 8.11% increase compared to Q1 2025. Meanwhile, LRT Jabodebek served 7,754,946 passengers, growing 22.10% compared to the same period last year. Daily public mobility remains sustained from morning to night, following the rhythm of a city that never truly stops.
Journeys to airports have also become more accessible. In Q1 2026, PSO services managed by KAI Bandara were utilized by 1,527,622 passengers, an increase of 10.14% compared to the previous year. Trips from Yogyakarta to YIA Airport as well as services in North Sumatra via the Srilelawangsa Train form part of an expanding connectivity network for the public.
Overall, more than 115.32 million passengers benefited from PSO-based services across KAI Group during the first three months of this year. This figure reflects steadily growing public mobility and the ongoing demand for affordable transportation.
Anne added that this PSO service represents the government's presence through the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation in ensuring the public maintains access to affordable transport options.
"We extend our gratitude for the government's trust. Through this support, more people can stay mobile and carry out their daily activities at more affordable costs," Anne continued.
For many, this commute forms a routine part of daily life. From the first steps taken in the morning to the journey back home at night, trains connect a continuous range of activities. Every trip carries stories of dedication, hope, and daily responsibility.
"KAI Group will ensure every service assignment is executed in accordance with Good Corporate Governance (GCG) principles so that its benefits are widely felt across society. By maintaining service quality, the railway will remain a reliable part of daily travel for the public, day in and day out," Anne concluded.
