KAI Introduces People’s Economy Train, A Comfortable and Affordable Alternative for Lebaran Travel
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is introducing the People’s Economy Train as an alternative travel option for the public during the 2026 Lebaran Transportation period. The introduction of this service is part of KAI’s efforts to expand transport capacity while providing a comfortable travel option at an affordable fare.
As of March 13, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB), ticket sales for the People’s Economy Train had reached 22,355 tickets out of a total of 27,368 seats provided, or approximately 82 percent occupancy. This figure is expected to continue increasing as travel demand rises ahead of the peak Lebaran homecoming period.
During its first three days of operation, from March 11 to March 13, 2026, the People’s Economy Train had served 3,071 customers. This achievement demonstrates the public’s high enthusiasm for the service as a comfortable and affordable alternative for Lebaran travel.
KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin said that the People’s Economy Train was introduced to provide an alternative travel option for the public with greater capacity and a more comfortable travel experience.
“We introduced the People’s Economy Train to expand travel options for the public during the Lebaran period. With increased capacity and a more comfortable seating arrangement, this service is expected to support public mobility while maintaining affordable railway fares,” said Bobby.
The People’s Economy Train is included in an Additional Train on the Pasarsenen–Lempuyangan route, consisting of five Executive carriages and four People’s Economy carriages. The total capacity of the train set reaches 250 Executive Class seats and 372 People’s Economy Class seats.
The train set operates on the following journeys:
- KA 7039 Additional Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen, departing at 06:00 WIB and arriving at 13:56 WIB
- KA 7040 Additional Pasarsenen–Lempuyangan, departing at 15:25 WIB and arriving at 22:57 WIB
The People’s Economy Train features a more ergonomic and spacious seating arrangement for long-distance journeys. Each carriage has 93 seats in a 3–2 configuration, providing more space compared with the previous arrangement, which had a capacity of 106 seats.
In addition, the seats on this train are equipped with reversible features, allowing the direction of the seats to be adjusted according to the direction of the train, providing greater comfort for customers during the journey.
In terms of fares, this service is positioned above subsidized Economy Class under the Public Service Obligation (PSO) and below Regular Economy Class. For the longest route during this year’s Lebaran Transportation period, fares for the People’s Economy Train start from Rp175,000, continuing to provide an affordable travel option while offering improved comfort for customers.
Bobby added that optimizing existing rolling stock is part of service innovation to increase transport capacity during periods of high public mobility such as Lebaran.
“By optimizing the available rolling stock, travel capacity can be increased while also providing customers with a better travel experience. We want to ensure that people have more options for safe, comfortable, and affordable train travel during the Lebaran Transportation period,” concluded Bobby.
Through the operation of the People’s Economy Train, KAI is expanding access to rail-based public transportation, supporting smoother homecoming travel, and maintaining service affordability for various customer segments during the 2026 Lebaran Transportation period.
