KAI Transports 16,000 Free Homecoming Program Participants by Train
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) on March 17, 2026, transported 480 free homecoming program participants from Pasarsenen Station to Semarang Tawang using KA Tawang Jaya Premium (KA 178B). The train departed at 06:45 WIB with Economy Class service as part of KAI’s support for the free homecoming program during the 2026 Lebaran Transportation period.
The departure provided direct benefits to the community by offering a safe, comfortable, affordable, and scheduled homecoming journey. Amid increasing mobility ahead of Eid al-Fitr, trains serve as a mass transportation option capable of handling long-distance travel in a more orderly and efficient manner.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba explained that the departure of the free homecoming program participants is part of KAI’s contribution to supporting the smooth flow of this year’s Lebaran homecoming period.
“On March 17, 2026, KAI transported 480 free homecoming program participants from Pasarsenen Station to Semarang Tawang using KA Tawang Jaya Premium. This departure is part of KAI’s support for the implementation of the free homecoming program during the 2026 Lebaran Transportation period, while also reinforcing the role of trains as a safe, comfortable, and efficient mass transportation mode for the public,” said Anne.
More broadly, KAI also supports the implementation of free homecoming programs organized in collaboration with the government, state-owned enterprises, and various other institutions. Based on group ticket data for the 2026 Lebaran Transportation period, there were 14 booking parties consisting of 3 government institutions, 10 state-owned enterprises, and 1 private company, with a total volume of 39,801 customers.
Of this number, 2,811 customers used Executive Class services, while 36,990 customers used Economy Class services. For Economy Class, the breakdown consisted of 34,166 commercial Economy customers and 2,824 PSO Economy customers. The demand was distributed across 40 train numbers, comprising 7 requests for Executive Trains, 32 requests for Economy Trains, and 1 request for a Mixed-Class Train.
From March 13 to 16, 2026, approximately 15,706 customers had enjoyed free homecoming journeys by train. This achievement demonstrates the high public interest in free homecoming programs based on mass transportation, which offer large capacity, निश्चित travel schedules, and support safer homecoming journeys free from road congestion.
Anne added that KAI’s support for the free homecoming program is also part of efforts to encourage the public to shift their homecoming journeys from private vehicles to trains. This step is important to support travel safety, reduce traffic congestion on major homecoming routes, and create smoother and more controlled Lebaran mobility.
“Trains are one of the mobility solutions during the homecoming period because they provide safer, congestion-free journeys with certainty in travel time. Through this free homecoming program, KAI aims to expand public access to reliable public transportation services while supporting the overall smooth operation of the 2026 Lebaran Transportation period,” explained Anne.
Anne added that public interest is aligned with KAI’s commitment to maintaining operational service quality. During February 2026, the On Time Performance of passenger train journeys was recorded at 99.84 percent for departures and 97.61 percent for arrivals.
This operational performance is an important factor in building public confidence in railway services, particularly during the homecoming period when punctuality, safety, and comfort are customers’ main needs. With strong transport capacity and maintained service quality, KAI continues to strengthen its role as a reliable transportation mode during the Lebaran Transportation period.
“Through this support, KAI aims to provide wider benefits to the community, help facilitate mobility during the homecoming period, and support the implementation of the 2026 Lebaran Transportation period so that it takes place in a more orderly, safe, smooth, and controlled manner,” concluded Anne.
