KAI's Retail Freight Volume Reaches 42,405 Tonnes in Early 2026, Supporting Goods Distribution Ahead of Eid
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded a retail freight volume of 42,405 tonnes during the January–February 2026 period. This achievement reflects the steady flow of goods distribution at the beginning of the year, as trade activity increases and businesses prepare to meet demand during Ramadan and the Eid holiday season.
The result continues the company's positive growth trend over the past two years. Throughout 2025, KAI transported 252,976 tonnes of retail freight, up from 224,865 tonnes in 2024. This growth underscores the increasingly important role of rail transport in strengthening interregional supply chains across Indonesia.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the retail freight service plays a vital role in distributing consumer goods, daily necessities, and commodities that support commercial activities. The beginning of the year is a critical period for businesses to ensure adequate inventory before demand rises during Ramadan and Eid.
KAI's retail freight business operates through two service models: Business-to-Business (B2B), in collaboration with authorised logistics partners, and Business-to-Customer (B2C), which allows individuals and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to ship goods through KAI's partner network. The service is integrated with various courier companies, e-commerce fulfilment providers, and intercity delivery services, enabling businesses to reach wider markets with competitive shipping costs.
As Eid approaches, the movement of goods typically increases in line with rising consumer demand. Reliable freight distribution helps maintain stable product availability in the market while supporting economic activity across cities and regions. KAI's retail freight service plays an important role in ensuring the logistics network operates smoothly during this peak period.
Cost-efficient logistics is another key benefit for businesses. At the same time, shifting freight transportation to rail also helps reduce congestion on the country's road network.
Anne added that KAI continues to adjust its operations to ensure freight capacity remains aligned with market demand throughout 2026. The company is also strengthening coordination with its business partners to maintain reliable services and on-time deliveries.
With 42,405 tonnes transported during the first two months of 2026, following an increase from 224,865 tonnes in 2024 to 252,976 tonnes in 2025, KAI's retail freight service continues to make a growing contribution to Indonesia's economy.
"Reliable goods distribution is essential to supporting MSMEs, trade, and the public's preparedness for the Eid holiday season," Anne concluded.
