Train travel always carries stories. Across South Sumatra and Lampung, the Rajabasa Train (KA Rajabasa) represents shortened distances, reconnected families, and steady economic activity. Serving the 389-kilometer Kertapati–Tanjungkarang route with an average travel time of 9 hours and 20 minutes, this service connects two provinces closely tied in the daily lives of their communities.

Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, noted that KA Rajabasa has become an integral part of daily life for residents across these provinces.

"KA Rajabasa serves students, workers, traders, and families visiting relatives. With affordable fares and consistent schedules, the public can plan their journeys with greater comfort," said Anne.

Public trust in the service is reflected in its growing passenger numbers. In January 2025, KA Rajabasa served 54,987 passengers. By January 2026, that figure rose to 79,858 passengers—a growth of 45.23 percent. This increase demonstrates a strong and sustained demand for interregional mobility.

Operating as a Public Service Obligation (PSO) Economy service mandated to KAI by the Directorate General of Railways under the Ministry of Transportation, KA Rajabasa sets its maximum fare for the full distance at Rp32,000. Covering nearly 400 kilometers, this pricing ensures accessible travel options for all segments of society.

The route originates in Palembang at Kertapati Station and terminates in Bandar Lampung at Tanjungkarang Station. Along the journey, the train makes stops at several intermediate stations, including Prabumulih, Baturaja, Martapura, Blambangan Umpu, Kotabumi, and Tegineneng.

Around Martapura, wooden stilt houses line the railway tracks alongside rubber plantations and expansive rice fields, offering a view of the warm and natural landscape of southern Sumatra. From behind the train windows, the transition from urban settings to rural countryside provides passengers with a distinct travel experience.

KA Rajabasa is equipped with amenities designed for long-distance journeys. Air conditioning maintains a comfortable interior temperature, leather-upholstered seats are arranged face-to-face with small tables and power outlets, and restrooms are available in every carriage. Luggage racks facilitate convenient storage, food and beverage services are available onboard, and train personnel work to maintain a safe and orderly trip.

For travelers arriving at Gambir Station in Jakarta from various cities across Java via long-distance train, journeys toward Lampung can be continued using DAMRI bus services. These buses operate direct routes to Tanjungkarang Station with fares ranging from Rp255,000 to Rp390,000, depending on the service class. The fare includes the Merak–Bakauheni ferry crossing, allowing passengers to continue their travel across Sumatra with integrated transit options to their destination station.

KA Rajabasa provides a practical, affordable, and relevant travel option for community mobility. The 389-kilometer line maintains interprovincial connectivity while remaining part of the daily journeys of people moving across the region.

"For schedule information and ticket purchases, the public can access the Access by KAI app and other official sales channels," Anne concluded.
