KAI President Director Inspects Kedungjati–Tanggung Line, Encourages Reactivation to Strengthen the Economy and Preserve History
President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Bobby Rasyidin conducted a working visit to the Daerah Operasi 4 Semarang area (12/2) to inspect the condition of the inactive Kedungjati–Tanggung railway line and ensure operational readiness ahead of the 2026 Eid Transportation period.
This visit was part of the company’s strategic agenda to encourage the reactivation of a railway line with historical value and economic potential for the surrounding community. The Kedungjati–Tanggung line is part of the early history of Indonesia’s railway system and is among the oldest corridors in the development of the national railway network.
During the field inspection, Bobby and the management team evaluated the condition of the stations, infrastructure assets, and technical requirements needed to support the reactivation process. The evaluation was conducted comprehensively, covering safety aspects, infrastructure readiness, and the potential for developing areas based on the local economy and heritage tourism.
Bobby stated that the reactivation of this line has strategic significance in strengthening connectivity and promoting regional growth.
“The reactivation of the Kedungjati–Tanggung line will open new economic access, expand public mobility, and encourage the development of areas with potential in agriculture, forestry, and historical tourism,” said Bobby.
The Kedungjati and surrounding areas are known as agricultural centers and teak forest areas with potential for nature tourism. Based on data from the Grobogan Regency Statistics Agency (BPS) for 2025, the open unemployment rate at the regency level was recorded at 3.23 percent, with the population of Kedungjati District at approximately 45,000 people and Tanggungharjo District at approximately 43,000 people. Adequate transportation connectivity is expected to strengthen economic activity and people’s purchasing power.
In addition to its economic potential, this railway line has strong social and cultural value. Tanggung Station is known as one of the oldest stations with distinctive Swiss Chalet architecture, while Kedungjati Station has a historic building that forms an important part of the development of Indonesia’s railway system.
“This line is part of the early history of Indonesia’s railway system. Heritage preservation must go hand in hand with improving the welfare of the surrounding community,” emphasized Bobby.
Following the field inspection, the agenda continued with a coordination meeting with the management of Daerah Operasi 4 Semarang to discuss operational readiness, strengthening railway travel safety, and anticipatory measures for the 2026 Eid Transportation period. Infrastructure monitoring and emergency system readiness were the main focuses to ensure safe and reliable services.
“Safety is our top priority. Every railway line development must be accompanied by strict operational standards so that the public can receive safe, comfortable, and sustainable transportation services,” concluded Bobby.
Through this initiative, KAI reaffirms its commitment to providing rail-based transportation that strengthens regional connectivity, supports local economic growth, and preserves the historical heritage of Indonesia’s railway system.
