
KAI Group Urban Transportation Continues to Grow Throughout 2025
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded positive growth in urban transportation services throughout 2025. Various rail-based transportation services managed by KAI Group are increasingly becoming part of people’s daily mobility, ranging from work and education trips, economic activities, to connectivity to airports and agglomeration areas.
Throughout 2025, KAI Group’s total urban transportation services served 442,111,779 users, an increase from 406,024,854 users in 2024, or an addition of approximately 36,086,925 users. This increase reflects the growing mobility needs of urban communities amid continuously dynamic social and economic activities.
This trend is in line with the 2025 analysis by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), which noted that metropolitan areas in Indonesia are still dominated by productive-age populations with high daily travel intensity, particularly toward centers of economic activity, education, and public services. The Greater Jakarta area, Greater Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Medan, and Palembang were recorded as areas with the largest commuter flows, thus requiring high-capacity and scheduled public transportation.
The largest contribution to KAI Group’s urban transportation services throughout 2025 came from services managed by KAI Commuter. Throughout the year, KAI Commuter served 400,737,915 users, an increase from 374,484,307 users in 2024. These services are spread across several metropolitan and agglomeration areas that serve as centers of daily community mobility.
In the Greater Jakarta area, the Jabodetabek Commuter Line served 349,311,251 users throughout 2025, reflecting the high daily mobility of communities in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi. In West Java, the Area II Bandung Commuter Line served 18,727,643 users, supporting the mobility of communities in Greater Bandung and its surrounding areas. Meanwhile, in East Java, the Area VIII Surabaya Commuter Line recorded 16,020,323 users, in line with increasing economic activity and daily travel in the Surabaya area and its surrounding cities.
In the Special Region of Yogyakarta and its surrounding areas, the Area VI Yogyakarta Commuter Line served 9,015,768 users throughout 2025, becoming an important part of the daily mobility of communities, students, and tourists. Also in this area, the Prameks Train service operating on the Yogyakarta–Solo corridor served 1,113,023 users, supporting medium-distance regional mobility.
In Banten, the Rangkasbitung–Merak Commuter Line served 4,463,446 users throughout 2025, connecting western Banten with maritime transportation hubs and industrial areas. For airport connectivity, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line served 2,346,934 users, supporting the movement of airline passengers, airport workers, and business travelers to and from central Jakarta.
In addition to commuter services, KAI Group also operates the Jabodebek LRT, which served 28,816,787 users throughout 2025, an increase from 21,055,870 users in 2024. This service strengthens connectivity between residential areas in Bekasi, Depok, and East Jakarta and business centers as well as other transportation hubs in Jakarta.
Connectivity to airports was also strengthened through airport railway services. In Yogyakarta, the railway service to Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) served 2,865,729 users throughout 2025, an increase from 2,730,791 users in 2024. This service consists of the PSO scheme, which serves the public with affordable fares, as well as the commercial YIA Xpress service, which provides direct trips with shorter travel times.
In the Greater Solo and Yogyakarta areas, the BIAS Train, an airport railway service connecting urban areas with Yogyakarta International Airport through the existing railway line, served 769,490 users throughout 2025, a significant increase from 192,187 users in 2024.
In North Sumatra, the Srilelawangsa Train service serves as a key link between Medan City center and Kualanamu Airport, while also serving commuter trips for communities in the area. Throughout 2025, the Srilelawangsa Train served 4,115,680 users, an increase from 3,085,294 users in 2024, in line with growing mobility among airline passengers, airport workers, and daily travelers in the Medan metropolitan area.
Meanwhile, in Palembang, the South Sumatra LRT served 4,626,481 users throughout 2025, an increase from 4,350,217 users in 2024, and became the backbone of urban public transportation from the airport to the main activity areas of the community. In Central Java, the Batara Kresna Train service connecting Solo and Wonogiri served 179,697 users throughout 2025, an increase from 126,188 users in 2024, supporting mobility in the Greater Solo agglomeration area.
Vice President of Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba stated that the growth in the number of urban transportation users throughout 2025 provides an important foundation for strengthening services going forward.
“Throughout 2025, KAI Group’s urban transportation services became part of the daily activities of communities in various regions. The increase in the number of users reflects the growing need for more connected mobility and serves as a foundation for KAI Group to continuously improve service quality, travel comfort, and intermodal integration,” said Anne.
Anne added that rail-based transportation also supports travel time efficiency, helps manage urban traffic flows, and supports the economic and social activities of communities. In line with the latest BPS analysis, strengthening rail-based urban transportation is an important element in supporting the productivity of urban areas.
