Urban Jabodetabek Services Continue to Grow, Strengthening KRL Fleet as the Foundation of Reliable Mass Transportation
The development of urban rail transportation services in the Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) area has shown consistent growth over the past decade. The increase in passenger volume and travel frequency highlights the role of KRL as a key mass transportation system supporting the daily mobility of the metropolitan population.
In 2016, the number of passengers reached 280,586,407 and increased to 315,853,991 passengers in 2017. The growth trend continued in 2018 with 336,798,525 passengers and remained stable in 2019 with 336,274,343 passengers. Following the pandemic period, recovery was strong, with 217,964,892 passengers in 2022, increasing to 290,890,677 passengers in 2023 and continuing to grow in 2024 with 328,153,923 passengers.
In 2025, urban KRL services in Jabodetabek served 349,311,251 passengers, surpassing pre-pandemic levels and reflecting growing public confidence in rail transportation.
Alongside passenger growth, the frequency of daily trips has also increased steadily. In 2015, there were 881 trips per day, rising to 926 trips in 2017 and 978 trips in 2019. Since 2022, the frequency has remained above 1,000 trips per day, reaching 1,100 trips in 2023 and remaining at 1,063 trips per day in 2025. These figures demonstrate the high utilization of KRL services in supporting the economic and social activities of the Greater Jakarta community.
Vice President of Corporate Communication KAI, Anne Purba, said that this trend provides an important basis for planning the strengthening of urban transportation services.
“The consistent growth in passenger numbers and travel frequency demonstrates the strategic role of KRL in maintaining smooth mobility for the people of Greater Jakarta. Fleet readiness is a key factor in ensuring that service quality can be maintained,” said Anne.
Anne added that strengthening the fleet would improve punctuality, passenger comfort, and operational reliability on an ongoing basis.
“With the high volume of daily trips, strengthening the KRL fleet is an important part of ensuring that mass transportation services remain ready to support people's daily activities,” she continued.
The government's commitment to strengthening urban transportation services was directly expressed by President Prabowo Subianto during the inauguration of the new Tanah Abang Station on November 4, 2025. The President approved the procurement of 30 KRL trainsets by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) and increased the budget allocation to IDR 5 trillion.
According to Anne, this support provides a strategic foundation for maintaining the continuity of public transportation services in the area with the highest level of mobility in Indonesia.
“Strengthening the KRL fleet will ensure that urban rail transportation services remain reliable and comfortable, while supporting public productivity and the sustainable growth of the Greater Jakarta area,” concluded Anne.
