During the 2025/2026 Nataru Period, KAI Transports 2.7 Million Tons of Coal to Keep Electricity Supply Running During the Holiday Season
Behind the festive atmosphere of the Christmas and New Year holidays, when homes are brightly lit, shopping centers are bustling, and public activities increase, there is a quiet role working continuously to keep the energy supply flowing. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) ensures this through reliable logistics transportation services during the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year transportation period (Nataru).
From December 18, 2025 to January 4, 2026, KAI transported a total of 3,286,530 tons of goods. Of this total, 2,733,587 tons consisted of coal for power plants, serving as a backbone of energy supply in various regions, particularly Java and Bali, when electricity consumption increased significantly.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that the smooth distribution of coal during Nataru directly contributed to maintaining the reliability of the national electricity system.
“Long holidays are associated with increased household activities, tourism, and business activities. A stable electricity supply is essential to ensure that all these activities can run comfortably. KAI is committed to ensuring the smooth distribution of primary energy through well-managed and reliable logistics services,” said Anne.
According to Anne, railways have advantages in terms of large transportation capacity, punctuality, and high safety standards, making them a backbone for the distribution of strategic commodities such as coal. This provides certainty of supply for power plants to operate according to the needs of the public and industry.
In addition to coal, during the Nataru period KAI also transported various other important commodities, including cement, fertilizer, fuel, and consumer goods. These distributions supported the construction, agricultural, and industrial sectors, while ensuring that basic public needs remained fulfilled in various regions.
“We manage freight transportation operations with safety and reliability standards that are equally high as those applied to passenger services. Despite the increase in public mobility, logistics services continued to operate steadily thanks to cross-regional coordination and the readiness of our facilities,” added Anne.
KAI’s freight transportation performance during Nataru was part of the company’s tangible contribution to supporting energy security, smooth economic activity, and public convenience during this strategic year-end period.
“Railways do not only take people home or on holiday, but also ensure that the lights stay on, industries keep moving, and the wheels of the economy keep turning. This is KAI’s role in serving the nation, even while many people are enjoying their holidays,” concluded Anne.
