748,855 Passengers Used Face Recognition During 2025/2026 Nataru, KAI Strengthens Digital and Sustainable Services
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that 748,855 passengers used the face recognition facility during the 2025 Christmas and 2026 New Year transportation period (Nataru), from December 18, 2025 to January 4, 2026. The use of this technology is part of KAI’s efforts to provide optimal services amid increased public mobility.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that, in addition to making the boarding process easier and faster, face recognition also has a positive impact on operational efficiency and environmental sustainability.
“Face recognition allows passengers to board without physical tickets and without having to repeatedly show their identification. In addition to improving travel convenience and smoothness, this innovation also supports KAI’s commitment to sustainability by reducing paper consumption, which uses trees as its raw material,” said Anne.
During the 2025/2026 Nataru period, the use of face recognition by 748,855 passengers was equivalent to saving approximately 1,872 rolls of ticket paper, with estimated savings of around IDR 27.6 million in paper procurement costs during the period.
These savings also contributed to reducing the consumption of natural resources and paper waste, in line with the sustainability principles that KAI continues to strengthen.
The five stations with the highest number of face recognition users during the 2025/2026 Nataru period were:
- Gambir: 145,025 passengers
- Yogyakarta: 91,064 passengers
- Pasarsenen: 68,303 passengers
- Semarang Tawang: 51,805 passengers
- Purwokerto: 43,485 passengers
Currently, face recognition facilities are available at 22 stations: Bandung, Bekasi, Cirebon, Cirebon Prujakan, Gambir, Jember, Kiaracondong, Kutoarjo, Lempuyangan, Medan, Malang, Madiun, Pekalongan, Pasarsenen, Purwokerto, Surabaya Pasar Turi, Surabaya Gubeng, Solo Balapan, Semarang Poncol, Semarang Tawang, Tegal, and Yogyakarta.
Throughout the 2025/2026 Nataru transportation period, KAI served 4,179,095 passengers, an increase of 12.02 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. Operational performance remained well maintained, with departure On-Time Performance reaching 99.68 percent and arrival punctuality reaching 96.13 percent.
“Thank you to all passengers for the trust placed in KAI during the Christmas and New Year transportation period. KAI will continue to improve digital and operational services sustainably to make railway journeys increasingly reliable, safe, comfortable, and environmentally friendly,” Anne concluded.
Going forward, KAI is committed to expanding technology-based service innovations as part of the company’s transformation, while strengthening the role of railways as a public transportation mode that supports national mobility and sustainable economic growth.
