Airports serve as gateways to air travel. Railways and LRT systems act as land transportation links that help people reach those gateways more easily, on schedule, and through integrated connections.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), through KAI Group, continues to strengthen connectivity between railway services, LRT systems, and airports across Java and Sumatra. Throughout January–May 2026, KAI Group served 6,201,016 customers on railway and LRT services connected to airports.

This figure consists of customers using the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line, Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) Airport Rail Link, BIAS Airport Rail Service (Adi Soemarmo International Airport Rail Link), the Srilelawangsa Train in North Sumatra, the South Sumatra LRT, and the Minangkabau Express in West Sumatra. Of the total, services in Java served 2,518,233 customers, while services in Sumatra served 3,682,783 customers.

KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba said that railway and LRT services connected to airports play an important role in strengthening connectivity from city centers, residential areas, surrounding regions, economic centers, tourist destinations, and air transportation hubs.

“When stations are connected to airports, travel becomes easier to plan. Railways provide time certainty, expand accessibility, and help customers reach their flights more comfortably,” said Anne.

In the Greater Jakarta area, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line served 1,013,574 customers throughout January–May 2026. This figure increased by 14.78 percent compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 883,065 customers.

This service strengthens public access from the Greater Jakarta urban area to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. For customers traveling for business, tourism, education, healthcare, or family visits, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Commuter Line offers a more scheduled mobility option amid urban traffic congestion.

In the Special Region of Yogyakarta, the YIA Airport Rail Link served 1,129,627 customers throughout January–May 2026. This total consisted of 763,216 customers on the YIA Regular service and 366,411 customers on the YIA Xpress service. Compared to January–May 2025, when 1,117,749 customers were served, YIA Airport Rail Link ridership increased by 1.06 percent.

The YIA Airport Rail Link serves as an important connection between Yogyakarta’s activity centers and Yogyakarta International Airport in Kulon Progo. The service supports the mobility of tourists, students, workers, creative economy actors, MSMEs, and communities traveling to and from Yogyakarta by air.

In Central Java and East Java, the BIAS Airport Rail Service served 375,032 customers throughout January–May 2026. This figure increased by 24.90 percent compared to the same period in 2025, which recorded 300,271 customers.

The BIAS Airport Rail Service connects Adi Soemarmo International Airport in Solo with various surrounding regions. With the extension of service to Caruban Station in Madiun Regency, BIAS expands public access from the Solo Raya area, Madiun, and surrounding regions to an air transportation hub and activity centers in Central and East Java.

In North Sumatra, the Srilelawangsa Train served 1,775,765 customers throughout January–May 2026. This figure consisted of 664,833 customers on the Medan–Kualanamu route and 1,110,932 customers on the Medan–Kuala Bingai route. Compared to January–May 2025, when 1,736,958 customers were served, Srilelawangsa Train ridership increased by 2.23 percent.

The Srilelawangsa Train strengthens connectivity between Medan, Kualanamu, Binjai, and surrounding areas. The Medan–Kualanamu route provides rail access to Kualanamu International Airport, while the Medan–Kuala Bingai route expands connectivity from surrounding areas to Medan City and onward travel connections.

In South Sumatra, KAI Group provides access to the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport area through the South Sumatra LRT. Throughout January–May 2026, the South Sumatra LRT served 1,815,017 customers.

The South Sumatra LRT connects the airport area with the city center, educational areas, public service centers, sports complexes, and community activity hubs in Palembang. The service strengthens the integration of urban transportation with the aviation gateway in South Sumatra.

Meanwhile, in West Sumatra, the Minangkabau Express served 92,001 customers throughout January–May 2026. The service connects the Padang area with Minangkabau International Airport and serves as a mobility option for local communities, tourists, and air travelers.

The Minangkabau Express supports connectivity in West Sumatra, particularly for communities requiring access from the city center to the airport. This connectivity also supports tourism, education, trade, and family travel activities in Padang and surrounding areas.

Anne added that the integration of railways, LRT systems, and airports is an important part of the public transportation ecosystem. Through interconnected services, customers can continue their journeys more easily from their homes, city centers, or surrounding regions to airports.

“Airports and stations are two important nodes in people’s journeys. When they are connected, access to jobs, education, healthcare services, and tourism becomes more open. KAI Group continues to strengthen the role of railways and LRT systems as safe, comfortable, and integrated mobility connectors,” Anne concluded.
