International tourist mobility via rail transportation continues to show an upward trend at the beginning of the year. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded that 41,084 foreign tourists used train services throughout February 2026. Cumulatively, from January to February 2026, a total of 86,062 foreign tourists traveled by train across various major routes.

This achievement continues the consistent growth seen in recent years. Throughout 2025, KAI served 694,123 foreign tourists, an increase from 669,226 in 2024, 580,995 in 2023, and 300,708 in 2022. This rise demonstrates that trains are increasingly becoming the intercity travel mode of choice for foreign visitors looking to enjoy Indonesian destinations with greater comfort and direct connectivity to city centers.

Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that this increase reflects international customer trust in the quality of national railway services.

"We continue to maintain service standards through punctuality, fleet cleanliness, comfort, and the convenience of digital-based ticket purchasing. Rail journeys are designed to form a memorable part of the travel experience," said Anne.

Throughout February 2026, foreign tourist movements were concentrated at several stations serving as major hubs for cultural, heritage, and natural tourism destinations.

The top ten stations with the highest number of foreign tourist departures were:
1. Yogyakarta: 6,652 foreign tourists
2. Gambir: 6,609 foreign tourists
3. Bandung: 4,033 foreign tourists
4. Surabaya Gubeng: 2,278 foreign tourists
5. Pasarsenen: 2,147 foreign tourists
6. Semarang Tawang: 1,584 foreign tourists
7. Malang: 1,179 foreign tourists
8. Surabaya Pasar Turi: 1,068 foreign tourists
9. Probolinggo: 907 foreign tourists
10. Solo Balapan: 836 foreign tourists

The dominance of Yogyakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, and Solo highlights the strong appeal of cities with distinct cultural characters and landscapes. Direct rail access connected straight to city activity centers allows tourists to reach various destinations easily without needing to switch transport modes repeatedly.

The movement of foreign tourists via train also yields a positive impact on local economic growth. Travel activities drive hospitality, culinary, feeder transportation, and MSME sectors surrounding stations and tourist areas. Rail-based connectivity delivers more efficient travel while supporting sustainable tourism development.

"Moving forward, KAI Group will continue to strengthen service quality and intermodal integration to ensure tourist travel experiences become even more comfortable and seamless," Anne concluded.
