395,531 School Holiday Discount Tickets Still Available, KAI Reminds Customers to Bring Sufficient Luggage
The school holidays are a time many families look forward to returning to their hometowns, traveling, or taking their children to enjoy the experience of train travel. Amidst this increased mobility, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) reminds customers to carefully prepare for their trips, including organizing their belongings according to baggage regulations.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communications Anne Purba said that a comfortable holiday trip starts with simple preparations at home. Selecting only the items truly needed, packing neatly, and understanding baggage allowances will help customers enjoy their journey with greater peace of mind from arrival at the station until their destination.
"School holidays are usually synonymous with suitcases, children's bags, lunch boxes, and souvenirs. KAI encourages customers to bring just enough luggage to ensure comfortable space on the train, spacious aisles, and a more enjoyable family trip."
KAI stipulates that each customer is entitled to carry free baggage with a maximum weight of 20 kilograms, a maximum volume of 100 dm³, maximum dimensions of 70 cm x 48 cm x 30 cm, and a maximum of four packages or items. These items must be placed on the luggage rack above the seat or in a designated area.
This requirement is important because the number of passengers increases during school holidays. When luggage is organized, other passengers can enjoy a comfortable journey. Staff at the station and on the train can also ensure a more orderly boarding and travel process.
Customers carrying items weighing more than 20 kilograms and up to a maximum of 40 kilograms, or with a maximum volume of 200 dm³ and maximum dimensions of 70 cm × 48 cm × 60 cm, may still be brought on board the train, subject to an excess baggage fee. The excess baggage fee is set at IDR 10,000 per kilogram for Executive class, IDR 6,000 per kilogram for Business class, and IDR 2,000 per kilogram for Economy class.
Meanwhile, items weighing more than 40 kilograms or exceeding dimensions of 70 cm × 48 cm × 60 cm are prohibited from being brought on board the train. For large amounts of luggage, KAI recommends customers use a luggage delivery service to ensure a convenient journey and comfortable seating.
In addition to managing the amount of luggage, customers are also advised to pay attention to the type of items they bring. KAI prohibits customers from bringing pets, narcotics, psychotropic substances, other prohibited substances, firearms or sharp weapons without proper documentation, explosives, flammable items, and items with strong odors that could disturb other passengers.
Anne added that baggage regulations are not just about weight limits, but also part of the etiquette of traveling together. On a train, each passenger shares space with other families, children, the elderly, and passengers traveling long distances.
"The train is a shared travel space. By bringing enough luggage, customers help ensure the comfort of others, facilitate boarding, and create a more welcoming holiday atmosphere."
At the same time, public interest in the 30% Transportation Discount program during the school holidays continues to show positive responses. This government program, implemented through the Directorate General of Railways at the Ministry of Transportation, is valid for departures from June 20 to July 5, 2026, on Commercial Economy class services.
According to updated data as of June 24, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time, of the total cumulative capacity of 1,174,624 seats, 779,093 tickets have been reserved, representing 66.33 percent of the total quota. This leaves 395,531 discounted seats available for public use as long as quotas last.
School holiday travel patterns are also evident in the high customer interest in a number of favorite airlines. The Lempuyangan–Pasarsenen route recorded the highest number of passengers with 13,946, followed by Pasarsenen–Lempuyangan with 13,614, Pasarsenen–Yogyakarta with 12,216, Sukabumi–Bogor Paledang with 9,216, and Semarang–Tawang–Bank Jateng–Solo Balapan with 8,912.
In terms of train services, the highest volume was recorded on the Joglosemarkerto train with 39,263 passengers, followed by the Ambarawa Ekspres train with 33,217, the Pangrango train with 32,076, the Sawunggalih train with 29,730, and the Jayakarta train with 22,969. This data indicates that school holidays are a driving force for intercity mobility, family outings, and travel to activity centers in various regions.
Anne encourages those who haven't yet purchased tickets to plan their trips immediately through the Access by KAI app, the kai.id website, or other official KAI ticket sales channels. Customers are also advised to double-check departure schedules, identity documents, and baggage requirements, and arrive at the station early to ensure a smooth boarding process.
"There are still hundreds of thousands of discounted seats available for customers to take advantage of. We hope this year's school holidays will be a safe, orderly, comfortable journey, and full of positive stories for Indonesian families," said
