PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI) recorded strong public response to the Government's 30% Transportation Fare Discount program during the 2026 school holiday period. The program forms part of the Government's efforts to provide transportation stimulus, enabling the public to enjoy more affordable travel options during the school holidays.

The policy was previously announced by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto as part of the Government's stimulus package to maintain household purchasing power and support economic activity. In his official statement, Airlangga said, "For rail transportation, a 30 percent fare discount will be provided for travel between 20 June and 5 July 2026."

To implement the program in the railway sector, KAI collaborated with the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation to provide discounted fares for passengers throughout the designated travel period.

Based on monitoring data as of 30 June 2026 at 10:00 a.m. WIB, discounted ticket bookings had reached 1,155,879 seats, equivalent to 98.40% of the cumulative capacity of 1,174,624 seats. As a result, 18,745 discounted seats remained available.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the Government's transportation stimulus has helped people plan their school holiday travel at more affordable costs. Booking patterns indicate that passenger demand has been spread across major intercity routes, education hubs, tourist destinations, and short- to medium-distance agglomeration services.

"The 30% Transportation Fare Discount program gives people greater flexibility to plan their school holiday trips at a lower cost. KAI supports the implementation of this program by ensuring service readiness, providing comprehensive travel information, facilitating bookings through our official channels, and working closely with the Directorate General of Railways,"

Anne explained that the highest number of discounted ticket bookings was recorded on 28 June 2026, with 90,366 passengers. This was followed by 27 June with 87,175 passengers, 26 June with 85,397 passengers, 21 June with 82,061 passengers, and 29 June with 81,890 passengers.

Based on passenger data as of 30 June 2026 at 9:00 a.m. WIB, total passenger volume during the school holiday period from 20 June to 5 July 2026 reached 2,889,958 passengers. This consisted of 1,152,854 passengers traveling under the transportation fare discount program and 1,737,104 passengers purchasing regular fares. Discounted passengers accounted for 39.9% of total passenger volume during the period.

Compared with the 2025 school holiday period, discounted passenger volume in 2026 reached 98% of the previous year's level. Meanwhile, total passenger volume reached 87% of the 3,326,281 passengers recorded during the corresponding period in 2025. On several dates at the beginning of the holiday period, total passenger numbers in 2026 exceeded those of the previous year, including 20 June (107%), 21 June (104%), 22 June (102%), 26 June (103%), 27 June (108%), 28 June (101%), and 29 June (104%).

"These figures show that the transportation stimulus has become an important factor in people's travel planning during the school holiday season. Passengers are traveling on various dates, choosing diverse destinations, and increasingly relying on rail transport for well-planned mobility,"

KAI also recorded the five busiest departure stations during the period. Pasar Senen Station ranked first with 130,436 passengers, followed by Yogyakarta Station with 80,252 passengers, Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng Station with 56,039 passengers, Semarang Poncol Station with 54,502 passengers, and Surabaya Pasarturi Station with 44,767 passengers.

For arrival stations, Pasar Senen Station also ranked first with 122,282 passengers, followed by Yogyakarta Station with 82,246 passengers, Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng Station with 55,754 passengers, Semarang Poncol Station with 53,338 passengers, and Solo Balapan Station with 47,154 passengers.

The busiest travel corridors reflected strong demand between Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Semarang, Solo, and Surabaya. The top five routes were Lempuyangan–Pasar Senen with 17,527 passengers, Pasar Senen–Lempuyangan with 16,847 passengers, Pasar Senen–Yogyakarta with 14,826 passengers, Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng–Solo Balapan with 13,774 passengers, and Surabaya Gubeng–Yogyakarta with 13,715 passengers.

In terms of train services, the five highest-volume services during the period were Joglosemarkerto with 58,624 passengers, Ambarawa Ekspres with 55,644 passengers, Pangrango with 46,131 passengers, Jayakarta with 39,612 passengers, and Kamandaka with 39,584 passengers. Meanwhile, the five services generating the highest commercial contribution were Jayakarta, Joglosemarkerto, Ambarawa Ekspres, Kamandaka, and Pangrango, respectively.

Anne noted that the inclusion of several agglomeration and medium-distance intercity services among the highest-volume trains indicates that the school holiday period also stimulates short-distance travel closely linked to community activities. Passengers use rail services to visit tourist destinations, access educational centers, visit relatives, and travel between cities with greater schedule reliability.

"School holidays create dynamic travel patterns. While many passengers undertake long-distance intercity journeys, others choose shorter agglomeration trips for brief holidays. KAI remains committed to ensuring that all of these travel needs are served safely, comfortably, and efficiently,"

Based on train numbering, passenger volume on odd-numbered train services was higher than on even-numbered services. Between 20 June and 5 July 2026, odd-numbered trains carried 621,617 passengers, accounting for approximately 53.8% of discounted passengers, while even-numbered trains carried 534,262 passengers, or around 46.2%. Both odd- and even-numbered services recorded their highest passenger volumes on 28 June 2026, with 48,014 and 42,352 passengers, respectively.

KAI encourages customers planning to travel during the remainder of the school holiday period to regularly check ticket availability through the Access by KAI application, the official kai.id website, and other authorized sales channels. Passengers are also advised to ensure their identification details are accurate, pay close attention to departure schedules, and arrive at the station early to facilitate a smooth boarding process.

"KAI sincerely appreciates the public's continued trust in choosing rail transportation during the school holiday period. Supported by the Government's transportation stimulus and our collaboration with the Directorate General of Railways, KAI remains committed to delivering services that are safe, comfortable, reliable, and easily accessible for all passengers,"
