KAI's Local Train services continue to become the preferred choice for everyday travel. During the first half of 2026, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded 4,669,419 passenger journeys on its Local Train services, representing a 13.59 percent increase compared with 4,110,588 passenger journeys in the same period last year.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the growth reflects the increasingly important role of Local Trains in supporting daily mobility, including commuting to work, school, public services, business activities, tourism, family visits, and airport connections.

Local Trains are becoming an integral part of daily life across many regions. With reliable schedules and high passenger capacity, they provide a convenient transportation option connecting city centers with major activity hubs.

The growth was driven by increasing demand for both Public Service Obligation (PSO) and Commercial Local Train services. During the first half of 2026, PSO Local Trains served 3,582,434 passenger journeys, up 13.89 percent from 3,145,547 a year earlier. Meanwhile, Commercial Local Trains recorded 1,086,985 passenger journeys, an increase of 12.64 percent compared with 965,041 in the same period of 2025.

In West Java, the Pangrango Local Train, operating between Bogor and Sukabumi, remained one of the region's most popular services, serving 591,479 passenger journeys, up 6.69 percent year on year.

The service connects major centers of education, commerce, public services, and tourism, making it a preferred travel option for workers, students, entrepreneurs, tourists, and intercity travelers.

Meanwhile, the Siliwangi Local Train served 814,727 passenger journeys, an increase of 5.62 percent compared with 771,387 during the first half of 2025, supporting mobility throughout Sukabumi, Cianjur, and surrounding areas.

Pangrango and Siliwangi complement each other in strengthening regional connectivity across West Java. Together, they make travel between cities easier while connecting communities with schools, universities, markets, public facilities, and tourist destinations.

Local Train services also continued to strengthen mobility in West Sumatra. The Minangkabau Express served 120,599 passenger journeys, providing reliable connectivity between Padang City and Minangkabau International Airport.

Meanwhile, the Lembah Anai Local Train experienced remarkable growth, serving 162,428 passenger journeys, more than tripling last year's 51,035 passenger journeys. The increase highlights growing public demand for mass transportation linking residential areas with educational, commercial, and tourism centers.

According to Anne, the benefits of Local Train services extend beyond transportation by creating positive economic impacts around stations. Increased passenger movement supports local businesses, culinary ventures, retail activities, feeder transportation services, accommodations, and small enterprises.

The easier it is for people to travel between regions, the greater the economic opportunities that emerge. Local Trains do more than connect destinations—they also connect communities with broader opportunities and public services.

With their large passenger capacity, trains offer an efficient transportation solution while helping reduce reliance on private vehicles.

Looking ahead, KAI will continue enhancing Local Train services by evaluating travel patterns, increasing capacity where needed, refining schedules, improving station services, and strengthening integration with other transport modes to better meet regional mobility needs.

KAI remains committed to continuously improving the reliability of Local Train services. Safety, punctuality, comfort, and accessibility will remain our top priorities so that even more people can enjoy the benefits of rail transportation.
