People, Profit, Planet: KAI Maintains the Balance of Indonesia’s Journey
Every day, trains carry various stories of the Indonesian people. There are workers who rely on trains for their activities, families enjoying journeys together, business owners sending goods, and tourists exploring various regions. Behind every journey, there are needs, activities, and hopes that move along together.
For PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) (KAI), these journeys are not merely about bringing people from one place to another. More than that, KAI continues to strive to create a balance between the needs of the community, company growth, and environmental sustainability.
Vice President Corporate Communication of KAI Anne Purba said that KAI’s journey is always connected to the people who use its services, the economic activities it supports, and the environment that must be protected.
“KAI is here to serve various travel needs of the community. In every service development, KAI considers how the benefits can be felt by customers, support economic growth, while also protecting the environment,” said Anne.
This spirit is in line with the philosophy of KAI’s 81st Anniversary through the concept of People, Profit, Planet. These three elements illustrate how KAI continues to grow while maintaining balance. People places humans at the center of every journey and transformation. Profit reflects company growth, productivity, and the creation of sustainable value. Meanwhile, Planet represents KAI’s commitment to protecting the environment and promoting a greener future for transportation.
In terms of service, trains continue to be part of the daily lives of the Indonesian people. Throughout January–August 2026, KAI Group served 351,602,397 customers, an increase of 7.09 percent compared to the same period last year.
This figure comes from various travel needs, ranging from commuter trains for daily activities, long-distance trains for intercity travel, airport services, high-speed trains, to tourism trips. Each figure represents the journeys and stories of people who continue to move.
At the same time, trains also help drive the economy. Not only transporting passengers, KAI also supports the distribution of various commodities through freight services. In the first half of 2026, KAI’s freight transportation reached 32,498,043 tons.
The journey does not stop with people and economic activities. There is one other thing that is no less important: the earth where all journeys take place.
Therefore, KAI continues to carry out various sustainability programs. One of them is through the provision of 124 Water Station units at 58 stations. The presence of these facilities provides customers with the option to refill drinking water using reusable containers. Within six months, the Water Stations are estimated to have avoided the use of around 2.99 million plastic bottles.
KAI also continues to utilize renewable energy through the operation of 113 PLTS units at 92 locations with a capacity of up to 4,430.65 kWp.
“Train journeys are not only about moving from one place to another, but also about how transportation can provide benefits for the community and the surrounding environment,” said Anne.
This spirit of balance is also reflected in the philosophy of the number 81 in KAI’s Anniversary. The number represents the company’s journey from experience toward transformation, as well as from achievements toward a greater future. The connection between the numbers 8 and 1 represents the process of growing together with KAI employees, customers, partners, and the community.
Because ultimately, a good journey is not only about how quickly we reach the destination, but also about what is carried along the way. Benefits for the community, support for the economy, and care for the environment are part of KAI’s journey to continue moving forward.
With the spirit of “Semakin Melayani”, KAI continues to grow together with Indonesia, maintaining the balance between People, Profit, and Planet, and creating journeys that are increasingly meaningful today and for the future.
