Going Further, KAI Builds Indonesia’s Mobility Ecosystem Toward 2030
Trains are no longer simply a means of getting people from one city to another. Their role continues to evolve alongside the needs of Indonesian society—from supporting daily commutes to work and education, enabling business and leisure trips, facilitating the movement of goods, and strengthening connectivity across regions.
To keep pace with these changes, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) is preparing a major transformation through its 2026–2030 Corporate Long-Term Plan (RJPP). KAI is moving toward becoming a World-Class Railway Operator and Ecosystem Orchestrator, with a focus on building a more integrated railway ecosystem that brings together passenger services, logistics, technology, assets, and sustainability within one connected network.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba said the transformation is part of KAI’s efforts to keep up with changing mobility patterns while responding to Indonesia’s increasingly dynamic economic needs.
Trains are becoming increasingly connected to people’s everyday lives. Every day, millions of people use KAI services to go to work, study, meet their families, run businesses, and enjoy leisure trips. KAI’s transformation is aimed at expanding the benefits of railway services for society.
The growing role of rail transportation is reflected in KAI Group’s customer growth. From January to July 2026, KAI Group served 307,860,743 customers, an 8.32 percent increase compared with 284,202,884 customers during the same period in 2025.
This growth was supported by various KAI services. KAI Commuter served 242,932,764 customers, growing 6.65 percent. Meanwhile, KAI’s Long-Distance and Local Train services served 35,257,646 customers, up 7.63 percent. LRT Jabodebek also recorded strong growth, serving 19,079,347 customers, an increase of 20.96 percent.
Beyond passenger mobility, KAI is also expanding its role in supporting the national economy through freight services. During the first half of 2026, KAI recorded a freight transportation volume of 32.50 million tons, consisting of 26.53 million tons of coal and 5.96 million tons of non-coal commodities.
Trains help connect production centers with distribution areas. Freight transportation plays an important role in supporting the national supply chain, from energy and industrial sectors to everyday needs.
As digital lifestyles continue to grow, KAI is also making travel experiences increasingly seamless and convenient. As of 2026, the Access by KAI app has reached 29.87 million users, with 8.92 million Monthly Active Users.
Digital adoption continues to rise as well. During the first half of 2026, 76.49 percent of transactions were made through digital channels, highlighting the growing preference among customers for convenient digital access to KAI services.
KAI’s transformation also goes hand in hand with its commitment to more efficient and environmentally responsible operations. In 2025, KAI’s energy consumption stood at 10,107,302 Gigajoules (GJ), or around 10.1 million GJ, representing a 15.39 percent decrease compared with the previous year.
KAI is also expanding its use of renewable energy. As of 2026, 113 solar power plant (PLTS) units are operating across 92 locations, with a total capacity of 4,430.65 kWp.
Anne said the journey toward 2030 is an opportunity for KAI to keep delivering rail transportation that is increasingly relevant to the needs of the future.
KAI’s transformation is about developing a mobility system that connects people, the economy, technology, and the environment. KAI will continue strengthening its services so that trains can play an increasingly important role in Indonesia’s journey forward.
