Karet–Sudirman Integration Moves Forward, Travelator Assembly Begins
The integration of Karet Station and Sudirman Baru Station is moving forward. As of October 2026, construction continues around Karet Station, while the travelator equipment has arrived at Sudirman Baru Station and is now being assembled.
The project follows the relocation of Commuter Line Jabodetabek boarding and alighting services from Karet Station to Sudirman Baru Station on September 1, 2026. The integration work is scheduled to continue through December 31, 2026.
According to KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba, the work is being carried out while taking passenger movements and activities in the surrounding area into consideration. As construction continues at Karet, the travelator equipment at Sudirman Baru has also entered the assembly stage and will eventually serve as a connection between the two areas.
KAI is preparing one 20-meter horizontal travelator and two vertical travelators. The development also includes pedestrian corridors, station landscaping, drop-off areas for connecting vehicles, and other supporting facilities around Karet.
At the Kendal side, the work includes an additional access escalator, a walkway canopy, and improvements to the pedestrian corridor.
Sudirman Baru Activity Jumps by More Than 250%
The shift in passenger movement became visible after services were relocated from Karet. In August 2026, before the relocation, Sudirman Baru recorded 190,060 Commuter Line Jabodetabek passenger activities, averaging 6,131 activities per day.
One month later, the figure jumped to 646,411 activities in September, bringing the daily average to 21,547 activities. This represents a 251.45% increase in average daily activity within just one month.
The increase was recorded in both gate-in and gate-out activity. Average daily gate-in activity rose from around 3,691 passengers in August to 11,804 in September, while average daily gate-out activity increased from around 2,440 to 9,743 passengers.
The change was even more noticeable on weekdays. Average daily activity at Sudirman Baru rose from around 7,862 in August to 26,178 in September, an increase of around 233%.
Anne noted that the figures show how passengers have begun adjusting their travel patterns after services were centralized at Sudirman Baru. From an average of around 6,100 daily activities before the relocation, the figure climbed to more than 21,500 in September and exceeded 26,000 on weekdays.
For comparison, Karet Station recorded 606,724 passenger activities in August 2026, averaging around 19,572 activities per day, before its boarding and alighting services were relocated at the beginning of September.
Nearby Stations Also See Higher Activity
The change in passenger movement was also reflected at nearby Sudirman Station. Activity increased from 2,304,280 in August to 2,474,878 in September 2026.
On a daily basis, the average rose from around 74,332 to 82,496 activities, representing a 10.98% increase. On weekdays, average daily activity also increased from around 82,881 to 91,745 activities.
This shows that the increase in activity at Sudirman Baru occurred alongside high passenger movement in the wider Sudirman area. However, the increase at Sudirman Baru was significantly larger following the relocation of services from Karet.
Commuter Line Bandara Remains Relatively Stable
While Commuter Line Jabodetabek activity increased sharply, Commuter Line Bandara activity at Sudirman Baru remained relatively stable.
In August 2026, Commuter Line Bandara recorded 78,587 activities, averaging around 2,535 per day. In September, the figure stood at 75,654 activities, with a daily average of 2,522.
This means average daily activity for Commuter Line Bandara was only 0.52% lower than in August.
Anne explained that the passenger data serves as one of KAI’s references in assessing developments in the area. The largest increase came from Commuter Line Jabodetabek, while Commuter Line Bandara remained relatively stable. As a result, the facility development is being aligned with the travel needs that have emerged in the area.
Before the service relocation, Karet and Sudirman Baru stations recorded a combined 6,702,680 passenger activities from January to August 2026. The figure comprised 4,909,334 activities at Karet and 1,793,346 at Sudirman Baru.
These figures provide an important picture of the new travel pattern developing around the area. The Karet–Sudirman Baru integration is intended to make passenger transfers more convenient while improving pedestrian access and connections to onward transportation.
With construction continuing and travelator assembly now underway, the new connection is expected to support passengers’ daily activities between the Karet and Sudirman Baru areas.
Moving forward, KAI will continue evaluating passenger travel patterns throughout the integration process while ensuring that construction and facility development keep pace with mobility needs in the area.
