KAI’s Plantation Commodity Freight Gains Traction, Strengthening National Commodity Distribution

Trains do more than carry passengers. They also help move essential commodities across Indonesia, including plantation commodities, which saw significant growth in rail freight volumes throughout 2026.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) recorded 683,214 tons of plantation commodity freight from January to August 2026. The figure grew 91.77% from 356,794 tons during the same period in 2025, adding 326,420 tons of freight volume in just one year.

The growth reflects rising demand for transporting plantation commodities by rail. With high carrying capacity, scheduled services, and a network connecting production areas with industrial centers, rail has become one of the logistics transportation options for industrial customers.

VP of Corporate Communication KAI Anne Purba explained that plantation commodity freight is part of KAI’s logistics services supporting national industrial activities. With the ability to transport large volumes in a single journey, rail can support efficient and reliable commodity distribution for industrial customers.

One of Indonesia’s key plantation commodities is palm oil. Based on data from the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI), as cited by the Ministry of Agriculture, Indonesia’s palm oil production reached approximately 51.66 million tons in 2025.

Palm oil also plays a role beyond the food and industrial sectors, extending into energy. Its derivatives are used as one of the feedstocks for Indonesia’s national biodiesel program. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) began implementing B50 on July 1, 2026, using a 50% biodiesel blend in diesel fuel.

As the industry continues to grow, KAI provides freight services through its railway network, connecting production areas with various distribution destinations. The service supports industrial customers that require high-capacity transportation and consistent delivery schedules.

The growth in plantation commodity freight also reflects increasing demand for rail-based logistics. Anne said KAI continues to evaluate its freight services to adapt to industry needs and provide increasingly effective transportation solutions.

Globally, palm oil is also one of the world’s major vegetable oil commodities. Data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in Oilseeds: World Markets and Trade 2026 shows Indonesia and Malaysia as the largest contributors to global palm oil production.

As its freight services continue to grow, KAI is strengthening logistics connectivity between production areas, industrial centers, and distribution destinations. The rise in plantation commodity freight highlights the expanding role of rail—not only in moving people, but also in keeping commodities and national industries on the move.
