Indonesia’s mobility landscape continues to evolve, with rail increasingly becoming a trusted choice for everyday travel. From January to August 2026, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), together with KAI Group, served 351,602,397 passengers. The figure represents a 7.09 percent increase from 328,311,868 passengers recorded during the same period in 2025.

What stands out is that the vast majority of passengers relied on public services supported by the government. Some 317.7 million passengers, or 90.29 percent of KAI Group’s total ridership, used services supported through the Public Service Obligation (PSO) scheme and pioneer services. Meanwhile, commercial services accounted for around 34.2 million passengers, or 9.71 percent of total KAI Group passengers.

The strong share of public-service passengers highlights the role of rail beyond simply getting from one place to another. For many Indonesians, trains are part of their everyday mobility, supporting trips to workplaces and educational centers, intercity journeys, urban connectivity, and leisure travel—all with affordable access.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba explained that KAI continues to balance service improvements with accessibility. The company is focused on providing safe, comfortable, and affordable rail services so that more people can rely on trains for a wide range of travel needs.

Commuter Line services made the largest contribution to KAI Group’s passenger numbers, serving 277,272,682 passengers from January to August 2026. The service plays a key role in urban mobility through KRL Jabodetabek, Commuter Line Merak, Greater Bandung, Yogyakarta, and Surabaya.

For intercity and local travel, KAI recorded 40,379,062 passengers during the same period. That figure increased 8.69 percent from 37,152,345 passengers recorded in January–August 2025.

Growth was also seen across other urban rail services. LRT Jabodebek served 21,809,797 passengers, up 19.05 percent from 18,320,610 passengers during the same period a year earlier. Meanwhile, KAI Bandara served 4,647,947 passengers, further strengthening connectivity to strategic areas.

KAI Group is also offering passengers an increasingly diverse range of travel experiences. KA Makassar–Parepare served 231,764 passengers from January to August 2026, while KAI Wisata recorded 216,980 passengers—up 49.09 percent from 145,537 passengers during the same period the previous year.

The rise in passenger numbers has gone hand in hand with KAI’s efforts to maintain and improve the overall travel experience. Based on the Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) for the first half of 2026, KAI achieved a score of 4.53 out of 5, its highest score since 2020.

Looking ahead, KAI will continue strengthening its services to make rail transportation more accessible to the public. With services supporting everything from everyday activities to journeys across different destinations, KAI remains focused on delivering safe, comfortable, and affordable travel experiences for people across Indonesia.
