Rules for Taking Photos Both at Stations and Inside Trains

1. For personal documentation

You may capture moments in the form of photos or videos at stations or inside trains for personal documentation.

2. Avoid restricted areas

Areas that are prohibited from being photographed include places that are not intended for public access, such as ticketing rooms, workspaces, depots, train operation control and management rooms, as well as areas that may endanger railway operations. You may capture moments as long as you remain in passenger/public areas.

3. Pay attention to equipment

You are allowed to take pictures in station and train areas as long as the equipment used complies with the regulations. The permitted devices include mobile phone cameras with monopods/selfie sticks, DSLR cameras, action cameras, and mirrorless cameras.

If taking pictures involves complete equipment such as tripods, lighting, microphones, drones, or other professional camera supporting equipment, you must request permission beforehand.

4. Is permission required?

If the photos you take are only for personal documentation, you do not need to request permission from KAI. However, if the photos will be used for commercial purposes, permission must be obtained from the Non-Transportation Commercialization Unit. Journalists covering events must obtain permission from the Public Relations Unit. Meanwhile, institutions or organizations requiring documentation for research purposes must request permission from the relevant unit.

5. If a violation occurs, officers will issue warnings

When taking pictures, customers are advised to always prioritize security and safety. If a violation occurs, officers have the authority to take action, such as giving warnings if photography activities interfere with train operations, comfort, order, and the safety of train journeys, other people, or even the photographer themselves.

Those are the rules for taking photos in railway station and train environments. It should be remembered that the permitted activities above must still consider the comfort of fellow passengers. KAI stated that there is no prohibition for customers who want to take photos or videos in station areas.

“Taking pictures in railway areas, especially at stations or inside trains, is permitted without requiring permission as long as the area remains a public area. During photography activities, we urge customers to maintain order, comfort, safety, and not interfere with train operations. If violations occur, firm action will be taken by officers,” concluded Joni.
