2.1 Million People Traveled by Train During the 2022 Christmas and New Year Holiday Period
The 2022 Christmas and New Year holiday period, which lasted from 17 December 2021 to 4 January 2022, has officially ended.
During the holiday period, KAI operated its Christmas and New Year service post and served a total of 2,125,299 train passengers, averaging 111,857 passengers per day. Of this total, 931,525 passengers traveled on Long-Distance Trains, while 1,193,774 passengers used Local Train services.
The number of passengers during the 2022 Christmas and New Year period increased by 49% compared to the 2021 holiday period, when KAI served 1,428,059 passengers.
KAI officers conducted ticket inspections and verified passengers' travel requirements during the boarding process.
"Alhamdulillah, this year's Christmas and New Year service operations ran smoothly, safely, and under control. Although passenger volume increased, our services operated well, and we continued to implement strict health protocols," said KAI President Director Didiek Hartantyo.
The increase in passenger numbers was driven by the higher number of train services operated during the holiday period. During the 2022 Christmas and New Year season, KAI operated a total of 7,213 Long-Distance and Local Train services, averaging 380 train trips per day. This represents a 48% increase compared to the 2021 holiday period, when KAI operated 4,860 train services, averaging 256 trips per day.
Didiek explained that although passenger numbers increased compared to the 2021 holiday period, the total number of passengers served was still only 35% of the passenger volume recorded during the 2020 Christmas and New Year holiday season before the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase in passengers, accompanied by strict health protocol enforcement, is expected to support KAI's performance recovery as the company enters 2022.
The highest passenger volumes during the 2022 Christmas and New Year period were recorded on Sunday, 19 December 2021, with 143,746 passengers, and Sunday, 2 January 2022, with 153,066 passengers. The most popular train services during the holiday season included Airlangga Train (Pasarsenen – Surabaya Pasarturi round trip), Sri Tanjung Train (Lempuyangan – Ketapang round trip), Kahuripan Train (Kiaracondong – Blitar round trip), Malabar Train (Bandung – Malang round trip), Argo Wilis Train (Bandung – Surabaya Gubeng round trip), and many others.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19 through railway transportation, KAI consistently implemented health protocols and ensured that only passengers who fully met the government's travel requirements were permitted to board trains during the Christmas and New Year holiday period.
A total of 35,306 passengers were denied boarding between 17 December 2021 and 4 January 2022. Of these, 5,931 passengers had not received their first or second COVID-19 vaccination, 15,863 passengers under the age of 12 did not have a negative PCR test result, 139 passengers were unwell, and 13,373 passengers failed to present a negative antigen test result.
To help passengers meet the travel requirements during the 2022 Christmas and New Year holiday period, KAI provided PCR testing services at 19 stations. This service was introduced because, from 24 December 2021 to 2 January 2022, passengers under the age of 12 were required to present a negative PCR test result. A total of 3,690 passengers took PCR tests at the stations.
Didiek stated that KAI's success in serving passengers during the 2022 Christmas and New Year holiday period was made possible through the dedication of all KAI employees and the collaboration of all stakeholders in delivering the best possible service while prioritizing customer service and safety.
"We would also like to thank all KAI customers for choosing railway transportation during the 2022 Christmas and New Year holiday period and for complying with the health protocols. KAI will continue to honor this trust by further improving our services throughout 2022," Didiek concluded. (Public Relations KAI)
