Long before the latest generation stainless steel trainsets appeared on the southern route of Java, a night train departed from Solo Balapan toward Jakarta, carrying a new identity for the travel needs of the people of Surakarta. On October 14, 1978, Senja Utama Solo began operating to serve the Solo Balapan–Gambir route. Nearly 48 years later, that journey still endures in the service now known as Fajar and Senja Utama Solo.

In its early days, Senja Utama Solo appeared as a business-class train. Its trainset used Goša-built carriages from Yugoslavia, which featured a distinct characteristic of eight windows on each side of the carriage. The shape of this trainset became part of the face of Indonesia's business-class train travel during that period.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the journey of Fajar and Senja Utama Solo illustrates the changing service of intercity trains over nearly five decades.

"Since Senja Utama Solo appeared in 1978, several generations of passengers have grown alongside this service. The trainsets, service classes, and facilities continue to change, while the name Solo remains an important part of its journey," Anne said.

When launched, Senja Utama Solo connected Solo Balapan with Gambir. The choice of nighttime travel time later became one of the characteristics attached to the name "Senja" (Dusk). The train carried passengers from Surakarta to Jakarta through the corridors of Yogyakarta, Purwokerto, and Cirebon, connecting activity centers in central Java with the capital city.

In its development, service on this corridor became known through two names that followed its travel times: Fajar Utama Solo for trips departing from Jakarta in the morning toward Solo, and Senja Utama Solo for trips from Solo toward Jakarta at night. Currently, both serve the Pasar Senen–Solo Balapan route via Yogyakarta and Purwokerto.

Historical records regarding the Fajar and Senja Utama Solo service also need to be read chronologically. Historical sources consistently record that Senja Utama Solo was launched on October 14, 1978, while some records note that the morning trip of Fajar Utama Solo developed later. Therefore, October 14, 1978, is more accurately positioned as the beginning of Senja Utama Solo's journey, which later developed into the paired service of Fajar and Senja Utama Solo as known today.

The journey of Senja Utama Solo did not stop at business-class trains. Entering the 1990s, its trainset composition became even more diverse. This train was recorded as having carried executive-A, executive-B carriages, as well as couchettes—sleeper cars equipped with fixed beds.

Records on November 25, 1994, even list a couchette service fare of Rp33,000. The presence of this facility showed that the Solo–Jakarta night journey during that period once offered a resting experience on the train different from regular seat configurations. After that period, the trainset returned to using business-class service.

"Every period has its own service character. The history of Fajar and Senja Utama Solo records a business-class train phase, once carrying executive and couchette services, to evolving into a service with the latest generation facilities," Anne said.

The long journey of this train can also be read from the origin of its facilities. If in 1978 Senja Utama Solo began its journey with Goša trainsets made in Yugoslavia, several decades later modernization brought domestically produced trains to the service.

In 2016, executive class returned as part of Fajar and Senja Utama Solo. Then starting May 21, 2018, the train used stainless steel trainsets produced by PT INKA, featuring executive and premium economy classes.

The next change occurred when the 2019 Train Journey Graphics (Gapeka) came into effect on December 1, 2019. The schedule arrangement made departures from Jakarta take place in the morning, while trips from Solo were conducted at night. The service naming then adapted to its time characteristics, namely Fajar Utama Solo heading to Solo and Senja Utama Solo heading to Jakarta.

Thus, the words Fajar (Dawn) and Senja (Dusk) in this service have a direct relationship with the travel time. These two names then became identities easily recognized by passengers on the Jakarta–Surakarta corridor.

The next modernization chapter took place on January 31, 2025. Fajar and Senja Utama Solo began using mixed trainsets of executive and premium economy classes of the latest generation made of stainless steel produced by PT INKA Madiun.

This change formed an interesting contrast in the nearly five-decade journey of this service. In 1978, passengers of Senja Utama Solo traveled using Goša business-class trains from Yugoslavia. Today, passengers use the latest generation facilities produced in Indonesia.

This historical span illustrates the transformation of Indonesia's railway industry from using foreign-produced trainsets in the past toward utilizing facilities developed by the national industry.

The long lifespan of Fajar Utama Solo runs alongside sustained travel demand. Based on KAI data, throughout January–August 2026 Fajar Utama Solo served 148,669 passengers, an increase of 7.65 percent compared to 138,102 passengers in the same period of 2025.

Throughout the first eight months of 2026, passenger numbers were recorded at 17,540 passengers in January, 14,036 in February, 21,068 in March, 18,049 in April, 18,995 in May, 20,335 in June, 19,656 in July, and 18,990 passengers in August.

March became the month with the highest passenger volume throughout January–August 2026, reaching 21,068 passengers. Cumulatively, there was an additional 10,567 passengers compared to the same period the previous year.

This growth provides a new context for the journey of a service whose roots have existed since 1978. The name, schedule, service class, terminus station, and trainsets have undergone changes following the times, but the corridor connecting Jakarta with Surakarta continues to hold a place in public mobility.

From Senja Utama Solo toward Gambir with Goša business trains in 1978, the couchette phase in the 1990s, the return of executive class, the use of INKA-produced stainless steel trainsets, to the latest generation in 2025, the nearly five-decade journey of this train also records the development of intercity train services in Indonesia.

"The long history of Fajar and Senja Utama Solo continues through passengers who still choose this service to this day. KAI will maintain its historical identity while continuously developing travel quality according to passenger needs," Anne concluded.
